Absa Bank Kenya runs on M-PESA paybill 303030, with your 10-digit Absa account number as the account reference. Reconciliation is fast for a bank, usually 30 minutes during business hours, up to 4 hours overnight, but not instant. When the balance has not updated and you can prove the M-PESA payment went through, the cause is almost always one of three things: a typo in the account number, the money sitting in an Absa suspense account waiting for manual sweep, or confusion with Timiza (a separate paybill). This guide covers each.
Three checks before you call Absa
- Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character code? If yes (e.g.
RG7HX9BC2K), the payment is accepted by Safaricom and routed to Absa. Take a screenshot, you will need it for any escalation. - Does the SMS recipient name read ABSA BANK KENYA PLC? That is the legitimate recipient of paybill 303030. If the SMS shows any other name, you paid the wrong paybill. Call Safaricom on 100 and ask for a reversal.
- Has it been more than 4 hours since the M-PESA SMS? If less, wait. Absa balance updates via paybill take 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the time of day.
Account number format gotchas
The biggest cause of "paid Absa but balance unchanged" is a mismatch between the account number you typed and what the Absa system expects.
- Use your account number, not your card number. Account numbers are 10 digits, printed on your bank statement and on the back of cheque books. Card numbers are 16 digits and look totally different. They are not interchangeable.
- No spaces, hyphens, or dots. Plain digits only. "Account number error" almost always means the input had a non-digit character.
- Leading zeros matter. If your statement shows "0123456789", enter it as 0123456789, not 123456789. Stripping the leading zero parks the money in suspense.
- Closed accounts. If you switched products (e.g. from a savings to a current account), the old account number may have been closed but still partially active for incoming payments. Call Absa before paying significant amounts to a number you have not used recently.
The Absa suspense account gotcha
When your M-PESA payment lands at Absa with an account number that does not match a live record, Absa parks it in a suspense account. The money is safe but not credited to your balance. Critically, Absa does not auto-sweep suspense accounts; you have to call.
To recover a payment from Absa suspense:
- Call +254 722 130 120 or 0709 933 000.
- Identify yourself with your ID number, full name, and one of your active Absa accounts.
- Give them the M-PESA transaction code, the amount, the date and time, and the account number you typed (even if it was wrong).
- Absa investigates and sweeps the suspense balance to your live account within 24 hours.
The longer the payment sits in suspense, the more steps Absa needs to trace. Always call within 24 to 48 hours.
Timiza confusion: paybill 303030 is for the bank, not the loan
Absa Timiza is a separate digital-lending product with its own M-PESA paybill, 300067. A common error: paying Timiza loan repayments to 303030 by mistake. The money credits to your Absa bank account, not your Timiza loan, leaving the loan outstanding.
To fix: log in to the Absa Money app, transfer the amount from your Absa account to Timiza, then repay the loan from Timiza. Or call Absa to do the transfer on your behalf using the M-PESA transaction code as proof.
Common Absa paybill errors
Account number error
The account number does not match a live Absa record. Causes covered above. Verify the number, retry.
Insufficient balance
Your M-PESA wallet does not cover the amount plus the paybill fee. Top up via an agent or bank-to-M-PESA. Or use Fuliza if enabled for a short-term overdraft.
Transaction limit exceeded
Per-transaction M-PESA cap is KES 250,000; daily cap is KES 500,000 for fully-verified accounts. For large bank deposits, use Pesalink or RTGS from another bank instead, or break into multiple transactions across days.
Paybill not found
You probably typed 303030 with a slight error. Common typos: 303031, 33030, 30303. Try again with each digit verified. If correct number still fails, Safaricom may be temporarily down for paybill 303030; wait 15 minutes and retry.
Scam paybills targeting Absa customers
303030 is a memorable paybill, which makes look-alike scams effective. Variants circulating on WhatsApp and SMS:
- 303031, 303032: trailing-digit, not Absa
- 30303: 5-digit truncation, not a valid paybill
- 30 30 30: spaces injected, sometimes typed into the M-PESA field intact, which fails
- "Absa changed paybill: XXXXXX" SMS or WhatsApp: always fake. Absa has not changed paybills in years.
Confirm 303030 on absabank.co.ke or our Absa paybill page before paying. If the SMS recipient is not ABSA BANK KENYA PLC, you paid wrong: call Safaricom on 100 and ask for a reversal.
Reversing a wrong Absa payment
- Call Safaricom customer care on
100(200on postpay). The 456 self-reversal covers person-to-person sends only, not paybills. - Give them the M-PESA transaction code.
- Safaricom contacts Absa for consent before reversing. Absa usually agrees on clear errors.
If you paid into someone else's Absa account by mistake, the recipient must give written consent before Absa can release. If they refuse, only a direct civil claim against the recipient works. Absa cannot force a return without consent.

FAQ
What is the official Absa Bank Kenya paybill?
The official Absa Bank Kenya paybill is 303030. Use your 10-digit Absa account number as the M-PESA account. If you paid any other number, the payment did not reach Absa. Verify on absabank.co.ke or our Absa paybill page.
I paid 303030 but my Absa balance has not gone up. What now?
Allow 30 minutes during business hours, up to 4 hours during weekends and overnight. Absa balance updates via paybill are reasonably fast but not instant. Check via the Absa Money app, *224#, or absabank.co.ke. If after 4 hours the balance is still unchanged, call +254 722 130 120 or 0709 933 000 with the M-PESA transaction code.
What account number format does Absa expect for M-PESA paybill payments?
Your 10-digit Absa account number, plain digits only, no spaces, hyphens, or dots. The account number appears on your Absa debit/credit card, your latest bank statement, or under My Account in the Absa Money app. If your account number is shorter (older accounts may be fewer digits), pad with leading zeros as printed on your statement.
I used my account number but the money still has not arrived. Why?
Most likely the money is in an Absa suspense account because the format you entered did not match a live record. Three common causes: (1) typed a wrong digit, (2) used your card number instead of your account number (they are different), (3) used an old account number from a closed product. Call Absa with the M-PESA code and your ID; they can sweep the suspense account into your live account within 24 hours.
Absa M-PESA says "Account number error". What does it mean?
The account number you entered does not match a live Absa account. Verify the number against your statement, the Absa Money app, or the back of your debit card. If you are sure the number is right but the error persists, your account may be flagged or dormant. Call Absa to confirm account status before retrying.
Can I repay an Absa Timiza loan via paybill 303030?
No. Timiza loan repayments use a different paybill (300067). The 303030 paybill is for Absa Bank current and savings accounts. If you accidentally paid Timiza via 303030, the money credits to your Absa account, not your Timiza loan, leaving the loan outstanding. Call Absa or use the Absa Money app to transfer between your Absa account and Timiza if you need to consolidate.
I get "Insufficient balance" when paying Absa. What is going on?
Either your M-PESA wallet does not have enough for the amount plus the paybill fee, or you are over the M-PESA daily transaction limit (KES 500,000 for fully-verified accounts). Top up M-PESA, enable Fuliza if you want a short-term overdraft, or break the payment into smaller chunks across multiple days.
How long does Absa keep my M-PESA payment in suspense before sweeping?
Absa does not auto-sweep suspense accounts. Funds stay in suspense indefinitely until a customer call triggers a manual investigation and post. Always call within 24 hours if your balance has not updated; the longer the payment sits in suspense, the more steps Absa needs to trace it.
Can I reverse a wrong Absa payment via M-PESA?
Ask Safaricom customer care on 100 (200 on postpay) with the M-PESA transaction code. The 456 self-reversal only covers person-to-person sends, so it does not reach a paybill. Safaricom asks the business for consent first, and Absa typically agrees on clear errors. If you paid a wrong Absa account (someone else's, by mistake), Absa needs the other account holder's written consent before it can release the money.
Does the Absa USSD code *224# show M-PESA deposits in real time?
Usually yes, but with the same lag as the Absa Money app and online banking. M-PESA deposits via paybill 303030 reflect in *224# balance checks within 30 minutes during business hours, up to 4 hours overnight. If *224# shows your balance as unchanged but the Absa Money app shows the deposit, refresh; the systems sync at slightly different intervals.
