How to send money from M-PESA to I&M Bank

Use paybill 542542, and put your full 14-digit I&M account number in the account field. The 14 digits are the part people get wrong. I&M states the length explicitly on its own page, and a short account number is the commonest reason an I&M deposit fails to land.

The steps

Open M-PESA, or dial *334#.
Choose Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
Business number: 542542.
Account number: your full 14-digit I&M account number, no spaces.
Enter the amount, enter your M-PESA PIN, and confirm.
A confirmation SMS arrives and the funds are credited to the I&M account instantly.

Fourteen digits, not ten

Most Kenyan bank account numbers people quote from memory are shorter. I&M's own M-PESA instructions say "Enter the I&M Bank Account No. (14 digits)", and that is the number to use.

If you only know a shorter version of your account number, it is on your statement, in the OTG app, and on your cheque book. Get it right before you send rather than after, because a mistyped account leaves the money unallocated and a trace takes a phone call.

This direction is free at I&M

I&M's live tariff lists "Mpesa to Account transfer" at Nil. So I&M does not charge you to receive.

You still pay Safaricom's standard pay-bill tariff on the M-PESA leg, which is Safaricom's charge and not I&M's. Our paybill calculator gives the exact figure. No paybill menu? There is a second route

I&M runs Mpesa Xpress, which pushes an STK prompt to your handset instead of making you navigate the Lipa na M-PESA menu. You enter the account number and amount on I&M's site, it sends a prompt to your phone, and you approve with your M-PESA PIN. Useful when the M-PESA menu is misbehaving, or when you are paying on behalf of somebody and want the reference typed rather than dictated.

Confirming a payment landed

I&M publishes a Verify M-Pesa Payment tool at digital.imbank.com/payment-validation/landing. If you have paid and want to check it reached the right account before chasing anyone, start there rather than with the call centre. If it has genuinely not arrived, call +254 20 322 1000 with the M-PESA transaction code, and do not send a second payment until the first is traced.
