I&M Bank *458#: what it does and how

The I&M Bank USSD code is *458#. It runs on any handset with no internet, and the path people search for most is money out to M-PESA: dial *458#, choose Mobile Money, option 5, then Account to M-Pesa, option 1.

Sending to M-PESA, the exact path

  1. Dial *458#.
  2. Go to Mobile Money, which is option 5.
  3. Select Account to M-Pesa, which is option 1.
  4. Pick the account and complete the prompts.
  5. The recipient gets an M-PESA notification of the funds received.
  6. The transaction shows on your I&M statement, and in the mini-statement on the same menu.

What else is on the menu

Balance enquiry, mini-statement, transfers, airtime top-up and bill payment. Note that I&M's tariff lists balance enquiry, mini-statement, internal funds transfer and airtime top-up as free, so the cheap enquiries really are cheap.

What is not free is moving money to a paybill or a till from your account, which is charged, and moving money to M-PESA from a business account. The charges page has the bands from I&M's own tariff.

You have to register first

I&M frames the USSD steps as being for customers "already registered for Mobile Banking USSD service". If the code does not recognise you, that is a registration issue rather than a fault, and +254 20 322 1000 or a branch will sort it. The same applies to OTG, which is a separate registration from USSD.

One security rule

I&M will never ask for your PIN or a one-time password, on the phone, by SMS or on WhatsApp. A USSD menu is where people key in PINs out of habit, which is exactly what makes an unexpected menu dangerous. If a prompt appears that you did not start, end the session and dial the bank yourself. I&M runs a fraud awareness page for reporting.
