M-Shwari
Also known as: MShwari, M-Shwari savings, M-Shwari loan
Full definition
M-Shwari (from the Swahili shwari, calm) is a joint Safaricom and NCBA Bank product accessible entirely inside the M-PESA menu. It gives users a bank-grade savings account and a 30-day micro-loan facility on the phone. Deposit and withdrawal are free between M-PESA and M-Shwari.
The loan side charges a 7.5 percent one-off facility fee on the disbursed amount for a 30-day tenor. Miss the 30-day repayment and NCBA rolls the loan for another 30 days with a fresh 7.5 percent fee, and after further non-payment the loan is written to CRB. Loan limits are algorithmic, based on M-PESA transaction history, Fuliza repayment behaviour and past M-Shwari activity.
M-Shwari is the older sibling of KCB M-PESA and shares the underlying M-PESA-native distribution. The 7.5 percent one-off fee looks small but is a 30-day rate, so the effective annualised cost is well above 90 percent; paybillke's review breaks that out with the current FY26 figures.
Worked example
In the M-PESA menu open Loans and Savings, choose M-Shwari, choose Loan, request KES 2,000. NCBA disburses KES 2,000 to M-PESA. Repay KES 2,150 within 30 days (KES 150 is the 7.5 percent fee).
