Online Jobs that Pay by the Hour in Kenya

By Josephine Njeri · Online jobs hub

Hourly online work exists in Kenya, but it is usually skilled work for a client, not an app that pays you per hour for tapping. Virtual assistants, tutors, customer support agents and freelancers on hourly contracts are paid for time they log, then the money reaches M-PESA through PayPal, Payoneer, a bank or the platform's own withdrawal. Anything that promises a fixed hourly rate for liking videos or rating products is the task scam.

Work that is commonly paid hourly

  1. Virtual assistant work: inbox, calendar, research and admin for an overseas client, often on a weekly hours retainer.
  2. Freelance contracts billed by the hour on platforms such as Upwork, where you agree a rate and log your time.
  3. Customer support and chat support for remote companies, often paid as an hourly or monthly rate. See remote jobs that pay in dollars.
  4. Some AI training and data work, where it is open to Kenyans. Check which AI training platforms accept Kenya first, because several do not.

What an hourly rate works out to

  1. Ksh 300 an hour for 4 hours a day is Ksh 1,200 a day, or about Ksh 26,400 over 22 working days.
  2. Ksh 600 an hour for 6 hours a day is Ksh 3,600 a day, or about Ksh 79,200 a month.
  3. Ksh 1,250 an hour for 8 hours a day is Ksh 10,000 a day. See the honest math on Ksh 10,000 a day.

How hourly pay reaches M-PESA

You are usually paid weekly or monthly for the hours you logged, in dollars, to PayPal, Payoneer, a bank account or the platform's wallet. From there you withdraw to M-PESA. Each step can carry a fee, so check what you keep; see getting paid to M-PESA and the M-PESA fees calculator.

The hourly-pay scam

Adverts offering a fixed rate per hour to like posts, watch videos or rate products are the task scam. The first small payments are real, to build trust, and then you are asked to deposit money to unlock bigger tasks or withdraw. Real hourly work is paid by a client for real output, and it never asks you to pay first. See how to avoid online job scams.

Frequently asked

Which online jobs pay hourly in Kenya?

Mostly skilled client work: virtual assistant retainers, hourly freelance contracts, remote customer support and some AI training work where Kenya is accepted.

How much is a good hourly rate online in Kenya?

It depends on the skill and the client. Ksh 300 an hour for 4 hours a day is about Ksh 26,000 a month; skilled work for overseas clients pays well above that.

Are apps that pay per hour to like videos real?

No. That is the task scam: small early payments, then a deposit to unlock withdrawals that never come.
