T-Kash Kenya 2026: register, activate, tariffs, interop, honest reality
Telkom Kenya's mobile money service, CBK-regulated, interoperable with M-PESA and Airtel Money since 2018. Requires a Telkom SIM. Register at a Telkom Shop with your ID, self-activate via *334# , customer care on 160 (free). Small market share vs M-PESA, sensible for Telkom users. For live tariffs, verify at tkash.telkom.co.ke.
Telkom Kenya (T-Kash) is CBK-authorized as a full mobile money PSP, first licensed 1 January 2018. See the CBK PSP entry.
What T-Kash is
T-Kash is Telkom Kenya's mobile money wallet, licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya under the same National Payment System framework as M-PESA and Airtel Money. It launched in 2018 as a rebrand of Orange Money. Since then it has grown slowly and holds a small share of the Kenyan mobile money market (well behind M-PESA and behind Airtel Money too, per CA quarterly reports). Interoperability with M-PESA and Airtel Money is live: sends, paybill payments, and cross-network merchant payments all work.
Telkom SIM requirement
T-Kash requires a Telkom Kenya mobile line. You cannot enrol on a Safaricom or Airtel SIM. Under Kenya's SIM registration rules, the Telkom line must already be registered in your name against your ID. If your Telkom SIM was registered under someone else's name, sort the SIM registration first, then attempt T-Kash registration.
Registration and activation
Two steps, in order:
- 1. Register at a Telkom Shop or authorised T-Kash agent. Bring your original National ID or Passport. You must be 18+. Registration itself is free. The agent captures your ID against the Telkom line.
- 2. Self-activate on the phone. Dial
*334#(or*334#) on your Telkom line, select Activate, enter your ID number, enter your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, set a 4-digit PIN, re-enter the PIN to confirm. You receive a confirmation SMS. Customer care line is 160, free from a Telkom number.

Free vs paid services
At activation, the free services are:
- Deposit at agent (cash in).
- Receive from T-Kash, Airtel Money, or M-PESA.
- Buy Telkom airtime or data bundles.
- Check balance.
- Change PIN.
Charged services:
- Sending money (to T-Kash, M-PESA, or Airtel Money).
- Withdrawal at agent.
- Paying paybill.

Interop with M-PESA and Airtel Money
Live since 2018 under CBK-enabled retail interoperability. You can:
- Send T-Kash to an M-PESA or Airtel Money number.
- Receive M-PESA or Airtel Money into your T-Kash wallet.
- Pay many Safaricom paybills from T-Kash where the business has enabled it.
The interoperability is at the sending-network side. The receiving business still needs its paybill enabled to accept T-Kash. When in doubt, ask the business directly for the paybill it wants T-Kash payments sent to.
Honest reality on market share
T-Kash is small. Communications Authority quarterly reports consistently place it well behind M-PESA (which holds the overwhelming majority of Kenyan mobile money) and behind Airtel Money. That has two practical consequences:
- Agent density is lower. Cashing out in a smaller town may need more effort than with M-PESA.
- Merchant reach is narrower. Many paybill-enabled businesses have M-PESA paybills mapped by default; T-Kash mapping is optional and inconsistent.
Where T-Kash makes sense: you are already a Telkom subscriber, you value the tariff structure, and your usage is either wallet-to-wallet with other Telkom users or cross-network sends where you accept the interoperability fee.

FAQ
What is T-Kash?
T-Kash is the mobile money service operated by Telkom Kenya, licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Kenya. Same regulatory framework as M-PESA and Airtel Money, much smaller user base. Interoperable with M-PESA and Airtel Money since 2018, so sends and paybill payments cross networks.
Do I need a Telkom SIM to use T-Kash?
Yes. T-Kash is tied to a Telkom mobile line. You cannot register T-Kash on a Safaricom or Airtel SIM. Registration requires a live Telkom line with the SIM registered in your name under Kenya's SIM registration rules.
How do I register for T-Kash?
Two steps. (1) Visit a Telkom Shop or authorised T-Kash agent with your National ID or Passport. You need to be 18+. Registration itself is free. (2) Self-activate: dial *334# on your Telkom line, select Activate, enter your ID number, enter your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, set a 4-digit PIN, re-enter the PIN to confirm. You receive a confirmation SMS. Customer care is on 160 (free).
What is the T-Kash USSD code?
Dial *334# on your Telkom line. Customer care line is 160, free from a Telkom number.
What is free on T-Kash?
At activation the free services are: deposit at agent, receive money from T-Kash, Airtel Money or M-PESA, buy Telkom airtime and bundles, check balance, and change PIN. Sending money, withdrawing at agent, and paying paybills carry charges. Verify the current tariff sheet on tkash.telkom.co.ke because rates move.
Is T-Kash cheaper than M-PESA?
T-Kash has historically been marketed as lower cost. In practice, the smaller user base and thinner agent network limit how much the tariff advantage matters: you still pay to cash out, and you often need to send cross-network to reach the person you are paying, which is banded. For most Kenyans the real question is agent access and merchant reach, not the tariff difference. If you are a Telkom user with Telkom-user peers, T-Kash is fine; if you need broad reach, M-PESA still wins.
Can I send T-Kash to M-PESA?
Yes. Cross-network sends to M-PESA and Airtel Money have been live since 2018 under CBK-enabled interoperability. The transaction is banded (tariff depends on the amount). Verify current rates at tkash.telkom.co.ke.
What is the market share of T-Kash?
T-Kash sits well behind both M-PESA and Airtel Money in Kenyan mobile money share. CA (Communications Authority) quarterly reports track the split; the honest read is that T-Kash is niche and best suited to Telkom subscribers rather than as a general-purpose primary wallet.
