What you need before you walk in
- An active Telkom SIM registered in your name. Under Kenya's SIM registration rules, the SIM must be enrolled under your ID. If it is not, sort that first at the same Telkom Shop.
- Original ID. National ID for Kenyan citizens, Passport otherwise. Bring the physical document, not a photocopy or a photo.
- You are 18 or older. Under-18s cannot open T-Kash. This is the CBK-set KYC gate on regulated e-money wallets.
- Your phone with the Telkom SIM in it. You do the self-activation on the phone in step two; there is no way around it.
Step 1: register at the shop or agent
Any Telkom Shop or authorised T-Kash agent can do this. If you are unsure whether an outlet is authorised, look for the T-Kash-branded agent tag; if it is missing, keep walking.
- Hand over your original ID and the Telkom phone number you want registered.
- The agent looks up the line, confirms your ID matches the SIM registration, captures the ID against the T-Kash record.
- The agent completes the enrolment on their portal. You may get an SMS acknowledging registration.
Registration itself is free. Anyone asking for a fee to open the wallet is not authorised. Walk away and report to T-Kash customer care on 160 (free from a Telkom line).
Step 2: self-activate on your phone
- On your Telkom line, dial
*334#. If nothing happens, call 160 free from that line rather than guessing at another code. Telkom's own activation FAQ prints*160#at this step, which contradicts the same page's answer on which channels exist, so we do not repeat it as instruction. - From the menu, choose Activate.
- Enter your ID number when prompted (National ID or Passport as registered).
- Enter your date of birth. Format is DDMMYYYY (8 digits, no spaces, no slashes). Example: for 12 March 1990, type 12031990.
- Set a 4-digit PIN. Do not use 0000, 1234, or your birth year.
- Re-enter the same PIN to confirm.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS. You are live.
What is free at activation
Right after activation, the following are free:
- Deposit at any T-Kash agent (cash into wallet).
- Receive money from another T-Kash user.
- Receive money from an Airtel Money user (interop).
- Receive money from an M-PESA user (interop).
- Buy Telkom airtime or data bundles from the wallet.
- Check your balance.
- Change your PIN.
Charged services (tariffs move, verify current on tkash.telkom.co.ke):
- Sending money to T-Kash, M-PESA, or Airtel Money.
- Withdrawing cash at an agent.
- Paying a paybill.

Common failures and fixes
- SIM not registered in your name. Symptom: agent says the line is not linked to an ID, or the ID does not match. Fix: register the Telkom SIM in your name at the same shop, then retry T-Kash registration.
- Date of birth format wrong. Symptom: activation rejects your entry. Fix: DDMMYYYY, exactly 8 digits, no separators. 5 January 1988 = 05011988.
- ID number typo. Symptom: activation rejects. Fix: check the number against your physical ID and try again. Three wrong tries typically lock activation for a period; call 160 if that happens.
- Name mismatch. Symptom: agent registration fails because your ID name and the SIM registration name differ. Fix: update the SIM registration to match your ID exactly at the Telkom Shop, then retry.
- ID pending in the government registry. Symptom: registration bounces because the ID number is not yet in the ID database the agent portal checks. Fix: wait a few days and try again.
What to do once you are live
- Deposit at any T-Kash agent to fund the wallet. Free.
- Read the tariff schedule on tkash.telkom.co.ke before your first send or withdrawal. The banded structure means the fee depends on the amount.
- Test interop with a small M-PESA send. Under CBK-enabled retail interoperability, T-Kash can send to M-PESA and Airtel Money since 2018. Send a small amount to confirm the flow before you rely on it for a real payment.
- Save 160 as T-Kash customer care. Free from a Telkom line, first line of defence when something breaks.
