NHIF was dissolved under the Social Health Insurance Act 2023 and replaced by the Social Health Authority (SHA) on 1 October 2024. SHA itself refers to it in published notices as the "defunct National Health Insurance Fund". There is no live NHIF payee, no NHIF account number and no NHIF ledger you can still pay into. If you are looking for NHIF, what you want is SHA: M-PESA paybill 200222, account number = your National ID (digits only). That is the same number NHIF used, which is why the old advice still appears to work. Nothing about your payment routes anywhere different depending on which name you had in mind. Contributions are 2.75% of gross monthly income with a minimum of KES 300 and no upper cap, for salaried and non-salaried members alike. Salaried members are deducted by their employer, who remits by the 9th of the following month. Non-salaried members pay monthly themselves, at a premium set through means testing. The one thing that genuinely carried over is unpaid NHIF claims owed to hospitals. SHA is still settling those in published batches, but that is money flowing from SHA to facilities. It has no bearing on how a member pays.
