Remotasks in Kenya: What Happened and What Is Left

By Josephine Njeri · Online jobs hub

Remotasks is not open to people living in Kenya. In March 2024 Kenyan users received an email saying Remotasks was discontinuing operations in their location from 8 March 2024. We have found no report of it returning since. Its sister platform Outlier, also run by Scale AI, does not list Kenya among the countries it can be worked from.

What happened in March 2024

Citizen Digital reported on 13 March 2024 that users in Kenya could no longer access Remotasks, quoting the email they received: operations in their location were being discontinued from 8 March 2024. Business Daily reported the same day that Remotasks had exited the Kenyan market. Rest of World later reported that Remotasks had shut down in Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan, and that Scale AI cited enhanced security protocols.

Users were told that pending payments would still be sent.

Has Remotasks come back to Kenya?

Not as far as we can find. Remotasks' own website, checked on 16 October 2026, still offers sign-up and says it is available in over 90 countries, but it does not publish the list of countries. We found no official statement and no news report that Kenya has been added back.

Outlier, Scale AI's other contributor platform, does publish a list. Its working guidelines, effective 15 July 2026, name the countries you may work from, and Kenya is not among them. Tanzania, South Africa and Egypt are. Outlier also says VPNs are not permitted.

Do not buy a Remotasks or Outlier account

Since 2024, accounts registered in other countries have been sold to Kenyans on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook. Working on one means working from a country the platform has said it does not serve, under someone else's identity. Both platforms verify identity, and an account that fails that check can be closed with its balance in it. You also pay the seller up front, and nothing stops them taking the account back. If you are offered one, walk away.

Where Kenyans can look instead

A few AI training platforms do not exclude Kenya in their own published rules. Our AI training jobs guide goes platform by platform, from their own pages: which list Kenya, which exclude it, and which say nothing. For ordinary micro-task and annotation work, see other annotation platforms.

Frequently asked

Is Remotasks still working in Kenya?

No. Kenyan users were told in March 2024 that Remotasks was discontinuing operations in their location from 8 March 2024, and we have found no report of it returning.

Can I use Outlier instead?

Not from Kenya. Outlier's working guidelines, effective 15 July 2026, list the countries you may work from, and Kenya is not on the list. It also says VPNs are not permitted.

Is it safe to buy a Remotasks account?

No. You would be working under someone else's identity from a country the platform does not serve, and the account can be closed with its balance in it.

Which AI training platforms accept Kenyans?

See our AI training jobs guide. Of the platforms we checked, micro1 is the only one that publishes a list of countries it cannot hire from with Kenya absent. Mercor lists Kenya as unsupported and Handshake AI takes open applications only from the US. DataAnnotation and CrowdGen do not publish a country list.
