Buy Now Pay Later in Kenya: How It Works and the Catch
By Dennis Kiptoo · Updated 12 September 2026
The appeal, honestly stated
BNPL gets you an item with little or no upfront cash and usually a light approval process. For something that earns you money, or something you genuinely need now and cannot pay for outright, that access is real and worth something.
The catch, equally honestly
The total is always higher than the cash price. Missed payments carry penalties and, with most providers, hit your CRB record. The item may be locked remotely or repossessed, because in most of these arrangements it is not legally yours until the last payment clears. Used to buy things you would not otherwise afford, BNPL quietly becomes expensive debt.
The one calculation to do first
Before signing anything, get two numbers in writing: the cash price and the total payable (deposit plus every instalment plus every fee). The gap between them is what the credit is costing you. If nobody will put both numbers in writing, that is your answer.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What is the cash price of this exact item today?
- What is the total I will have paid at the end, including all fees?
- What happens on the first missed payment, and on the third?
- Is this reported to the CRB?
- Is there a penalty if I pay it off early?
- Who owns the item until the final payment, and can it be locked or taken?
Frequently asked
- What is BNPL in Kenya?
- Taking an item now and paying in instalments, through asset finance, store lipa later, or checkout financing.
- Is it a loan?
- It is a form of credit, with similar CRB and penalty consequences even when it is not called a loan.
- What is the catch?
- A higher total cost than cash, penalties on missed payments, and the item can be locked or repossessed.
- When is BNPL a good idea?
- When the item earns money, or you genuinely need it now and cannot pay cash, and you have checked the total payable.
