A Kenyan point-of-sale system integrates with M-PESA in one of two ways: directly against Safaricom Daraja, or via an aggregator (Pesapal, iPay, Flutterwave) that wraps Daraja on the POS vendor's behalf. Direct is cheaper per transaction; aggregator adds card acceptance in the same plug-in. Which POS you pick depends less on the integration mechanics and more on your industry (restaurant, retail, service), your outlet count and whether you want inventory + accounting bundled with the till.

This is a fair comparison, not a sales piece. Every vendor listed has real deployments in Kenya and real strengths and weaknesses. We do not sell POS software.

Veira

Veira is a Kenyan-built POS with direct M-PESA integration via Daraja. It targets retail, hospitality and services businesses that want a locally-supported system with fast M-PESA reconciliation and a Kenyan-timezone support desk.

Strengths. Direct Daraja integration keeps M-PESA fees at Safaricom's standard merchant tariff. Locally hosted, Kenyan support hours, familiar with Kenyan VAT and eTIMS requirements. Solid inventory and daily-sales reporting for SMEs.

Weaknesses. Smaller ecosystem than international alternatives. Add-on marketplace is limited compared to Odoo. Not ideal for businesses that need deep multi-country consolidation.

Best for: Kenyan retail and hospitality SMEs wanting a locally-supported POS with clean M-PESA reconciliation.

Uzapoint

Uzapoint is a Kenyan POS with a strong focus on the food-and-beverage and hospitality segments. Direct Daraja integration; native support for kitchen printers, modifiers, split bills and stock movement between bar and kitchen.

Strengths. Hospitality-specific features out of the box. Competitive pricing. Well-known brand in the Nairobi restaurant scene.

Weaknesses. Less strong for pure retail (supermarket-style barcode workflows). Reporting is functional but not as deep as Zed for multi-outlet chains.

Best for: restaurants, bars, cafes, small hospitality operators.

Pesapal Sabi

Sabi is Pesapal's POS terminal. Because Pesapal is itself the payment rail, M-PESA (and card, and Airtel Money) is truly native: the terminal is the payment device. Popular with hospitality, ticketing, tour operators and any business already using Pesapal for online payments.

Strengths. Single vendor for POS + payments + bookings. Card acceptance in the same terminal. Well-integrated with Pesapal's hosted checkout for hybrid online + offline businesses.

Weaknesses. Payment fees are Pesapal's (higher than direct Daraja). POS features are lighter than dedicated retail systems like Zed.

Best for: businesses that value one vendor for the whole payment + POS + booking stack.

Loyverse

Loyverse is an international free-tier POS popular with Kenyan micro-businesses. M-PESA integration is not native; you plug it in via Pesapal or iPay. The free tier covers the basics (inventory, sales, receipts); paid modules cover employee management, advanced inventory and integrations.

Strengths. Free to start. Clean modern UI. Runs on cheap Android tablets. Large global community.

Weaknesses. No Kenyan-native M-PESA integration; you pay aggregator fees on top of Safaricom. English-speaking support only. No local eTIMS-ready invoice template out of the box.

Best for: micro-businesses starting free, willing to add aggregator payment fees later.

Zed Payments

Zed is a Kenyan POS aimed at supermarket chains and multi-branch retail. Direct Daraja integration, deep inventory features, multi-outlet consolidation and supplier / purchase-order workflows.

Strengths. Handles high SKU counts and multi-branch scenarios. Strong inventory. Direct Daraja integration (no aggregator markup on M-PESA fees).

Weaknesses. More complex to deploy than a single-outlet SME POS. Higher monthly cost per till.

Best for: supermarket chains, multi-outlet retail groups.

Odoo M-PESA modules

Odoo is a Belgian-origin open-source ERP with a POS module. Kenyan implementers add M-PESA via community modules that call Daraja, or via aggregator connectors (Cellulant, Flutterwave). Best for businesses that want POS + accounting + HR + CRM in one platform.

Strengths. Full ERP suite. Large ecosystem of modules. Runs on-premise or cloud. Handles complex organisations well.

Weaknesses. Requires an implementer to configure the M-PESA module and keep it up to date with Safaricom changes. Higher total cost of ownership than a pure-POS Kenyan-native option.

Best for: businesses that want the POS to be one module inside a full ERP.

How to pick

  1. Start with your industry: restaurants pick differently from supermarkets from services.
  2. Count your outlets: single vs multi-branch changes the recommendation.
  3. Decide on card acceptance: if yes, prefer Pesapal Sabi or an aggregator-connected setup; if no, direct-Daraja Kenyan POS is cheapest.
  4. Ask each shortlisted vendor for a live demo with your product catalogue loaded.
  5. Confirm eTIMS / VAT invoice compliance if you are VAT-registered.

FAQ

What does M-PESA POS integration actually mean?

It means the POS software at the counter can trigger an M-PESA payment (usually STK Push), receive Safaricom's callback, and post the payment against the invoice in the POS database automatically. Without integration, the cashier keys the amount into the customer's M-PESA menu manually and matches receipts later; with integration, one tap on the POS creates the invoice and pushes the prompt.

Do all Kenyan POS systems integrate with M-PESA?

The Kenyan-native ones (Veira, Uzapoint, Zed, Pesapal Sabi) integrate natively via Daraja. International POS systems (Loyverse, Odoo, Square-adjacent tools) integrate via a Kenyan aggregator (Pesapal, iPay, Flutterwave) that wraps Daraja for them.

What is the difference between integration via Daraja and via an aggregator?

Direct Daraja integration keeps you on Safaricom's standard merchant tariff (0.55 percent till, tiered paybill) with no middleman. Aggregator integration adds 1 to 3 percent on top of Safaricom fees but saves the POS vendor from maintaining Daraja compliance and offers cards + Airtel Money in one plug-in.

How much do Kenyan POS systems cost per month?

Ranges from free (Loyverse basic) to KES 15,000+ per month per outlet (enterprise Odoo, multi-branch Zed). Most Kenyan-native SME POS systems land in KES 1,500 to 5,000 per month per till, plus a one-off hardware cost of KES 15,000 to 60,000 depending on printer + drawer + tablet.

Which POS is best for a small restaurant?

Pesapal Sabi if you want one vendor for POS + payments + bookings. Loyverse if you want to start free and add M-PESA later via an aggregator. Uzapoint if you want a Kenyan restaurant-specific menu with kitchen printer support.

Which POS is best for a supermarket?

Zed for chains needing branch consolidation and inventory-heavy SKU counts. Odoo for large operators wanting POS + full ERP. Veira for supermarkets wanting fast M-PESA reconciliation and locally-hosted support.

Can I just use the M-PESA Business App as my POS?

Yes for very small operators (single till, no inventory, no receipts). It handles STK Push and payment confirmation, but not inventory, price lists, VAT invoices or kitchen printers. Outgrow it when you need any of those.
