How to repay an M-Shwari loan (2026): the menu, auto-deduct, and paying for another number

M-Shwari sits inside M-PESA, so there is no external paybill. You repay from the Loans and Savings menu, and any deposit to your wallet is swept toward the balance automatically.

M-Shwari is the NCBA savings-and-loan product built into M-PESA. Because it is inside M-PESA rather than a separate app or bank, you do not repay it through a Pay Bill number. You repay from the menu, and the system also sweeps deposits toward the balance on its own.

There is no M-Shwari paybill

People search for an M-Shwari paybill, but there is not one. Repayment happens through the M-PESA Loans and Savings menu. This is why the "via paybill" searches lead nowhere useful, the money never leaves the M-PESA rails.

Repay from the menu

  1. Dial *334# or open the M-PESA app.
  2. Choose Loans and Savings, then M-Shwari.
  3. Choose Pay Loan.
  4. Choose to repay from your M-PESA balance and enter the amount.
  5. Enter your M-PESA PIN and confirm.

You can repay part or all of the balance at any time before the 30-day term ends.

Automatic deduction

You do not have to remember to repay. When money next lands in your M-PESA wallet, M-Shwari takes what it is owed first, and the rest credits your wallet. If you want to clear it faster, top up your wallet and the sweep handles the rest, or use the menu to pay in full.

Paying an M-Shwari loan for another number

You cannot repay someone else's M-Shwari loan directly, because the loan is tied to their line and their menu. What you can do is send them the money on M-PESA. When it lands in their wallet, the automatic deduction pulls it toward their loan, or they repay from their own menu. This is the honest answer to a common search, there is no back door to pay another person's M-Shwari from your phone.

Repaying with Fuliza

You cannot use Fuliza to repay M-Shwari. Fuliza covers shortfalls on sends, bills, and buy-goods, not loan repayments to another lender inside M-PESA. Top up your wallet with real funds first.

Cost

There is no M-PESA transaction fee to repay M-Shwari from the menu. What you pay is the loan plus the M-Shwari facility fee (a one-month rate that NCBA sets), not a Pay Bill charge.

Frequently asked questions
