The short version: M-PESA wins on ubiquity, Airtel Money wins on free sending within its own network, and Equitel wins on bank integration and high limits. They are built on different models, so the right one depends on what you do with your money, not on which is best overall.

When each one wins

Choose M-PESA if you want the widest acceptance, because almost every business and person in Kenya can receive it, and if most of your payments are small and everyday. M-PESA processed KShs 41.68 trillion in Kenya in FY26 across 46.4 billion transactions, and 57.8% of those transactions carried no fee.

Choose Airtel Money if you and the people you pay are on Airtel, since Airtel-to-Airtel sending is currently free across all bands, and if you want its low-cost data alongside. In the pan-African view, Airtel Money served 54.1 million customers across 14 markets in FY26 with US$195.9 billion in throughput, so the platform is well capitalised for the long run.

Choose Equitel if you already bank with Equity, if you move larger amounts and prefer them coming straight from your account, or if you want higher loan limits than a wallet offers.

FAQs

Which is cheapest, Equitel, M-PESA or Airtel Money?
It depends on the transaction. Each has free tiers: M-PESA on small P2P, Airtel on Airtel-to-Airtel, Equitel on Equity-to-Equity and Equitel-to-Equitel. For sending across networks, compare the band fee for your amount, because none of the three dominates every band.
Can I send from Equitel to M-PESA?
Yes. Equitel supports send-to-M-PESA and send-to-Airtel Money at a per-band tariff. In the other direction, from M-PESA to Equity or Equitel, the sender uses paybill 247247 with the destination Equity account number or Equitel phone number in the account field.
Which has the biggest loans?
Equitel's EazzyLoan advertises up to KES 3 million, which is materially higher than typical wallet loans like Fuliza or M-Shwari. Your personal limit is what determines what you actually see, and Equity sets it based on your account and transaction history.
Which has the widest acceptance?
M-PESA. It has ~333,000 agents and 3.13 million merchants (1.04M Lipa na M-PESA tills, 2.09M Pochi tills) as of FY26. Airtel Money and Equitel are widely accepted for bill payments through interoperability but do not match M-PESA on cash-out density or till acceptance.
Do I have to pick just one?
No, and most Kenyans do not. A common setup is M-PESA for everyday payments because everyone accepts it, plus Equitel or Airtel Money for the specific things each does better (Equitel for larger amounts from your Equity account, Airtel Money for free within-network sends).
