Full definition

Airtel Money is Airtel Kenya's mobile money service, part of the wider Airtel Africa mobile-money footprint that Airtel Africa PLC reports separately in its FY26 accounts. In Kenya it is the second-largest mobile-money network after Safaricom's M-PESA, with a low but growing share of transaction volume tracked by CAK and CBK quarterly.

Access is via *222# (Airtel Money's own USSD menu) or the Airtel Money app. Standard actions are Send Money (to another Airtel Money wallet), Pay Bill (any Kenyan paybill), Buy Goods on Lipa na M-PESA tills, Withdraw at Airtel agents, and access to Airtel Money loans through partners. For sends to another network (M-PESA or T-Kash), Kenya uses *334# as the cross-network shortcut regardless of which network you are on. So Airtel Money customers use *222# for the Airtel menu and *334# when sending across networks.

Airtel Money's headline promise vs M-PESA is a simpler tariff and, historically, cheaper cross-network sends. Airtel Africa's FY26 group results carry Kenya-specific mobile-money numbers; paybillke's Airtel Money hub carries the current figures with source.

Worked example

An Airtel user dials *222#, chooses Send Money, enters another Airtel number, enters KES 1,000, confirms with PIN. To send to an M-PESA number instead, they dial *334# (the cross-network shortcut) and choose Other Networks.
