What Is Cryptocurrency? A Kenyan Guide

By Josephine Njeri · Crypto hub

Cryptocurrency is digital money that lives on a decentralised network, not inside a bank. You hold it in a wallet, you send and receive it directly, and every transfer is recorded on a public ledger called a blockchain. In Kenya, most people encounter it as Bitcoin (a store of value) or USDT (a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, used for payments and cross-border transfers).

How it works, briefly

You have a wallet with a public address (like your account number) and a private key (like your PIN, but way more powerful, because whoever holds it holds the coins). You send crypto to an address, the network confirms it in minutes, and it appears in the receiver's wallet. No bank in between.

Why Kenyans use it

For cheaper cross-border payments (stablecoins are much cheaper than banks for USD moves), for earning in dollars (freelancers), for speculation, and for M-PESA-to-anywhere transfers via P2P. It is not a payment method for daily shopping locally, and Ksh-priced things still price in KES.

The risks in plain terms

Prices swing hard, scams are everywhere, and if you lose your private key you lose the coins forever, with no bank to call. Kenya now regulates the space under the VASP Act, which is a good thing, but does not make bad coins safer. Never invest borrowed money.

Frequently asked

Is crypto real money?

It is digital value that trades against real currencies; it is not legal tender in Kenya.

What is the safest crypto to start with?

Bitcoin or a stablecoin like USDT, with a small amount you can afford to lose.

Can I lose everything?

Yes, if you fall for a scam, lose your keys, or buy something and its value crashes.
