Bitcoin in Kenya (2026)

By James Mwangi · Crypto hub

Bitcoin (BTC) is the oldest and largest cryptocurrency, and in Kenya it is bought mainly through Binance P2P with M-PESA, or through local on-ramps like Yellow Card, Busha and Luno. It is a volatile asset, so Kenyans hold it as a speculative store of value rather than as a payment method.

How to buy

Two routes as with any crypto: Binance P2P (cheapest, best rates) or a local on-ramp (easiest for a first buy). Buy a small amount first, confirm it lands in your wallet, then decide if you want more. There is no reason to rush.

How to store

Keep small amounts on the exchange for convenience. For anything you plan to hold long-term, move to a personal wallet where you control the private keys. Losing your keys means losing the coins, so back up the recovery phrase on paper, in more than one place, and never in a photo on your phone.

How to sell to M-PESA

Reverse the P2P flow: post a sell order on Binance P2P, wait for a buyer, confirm M-PESA has landed in your own phone, then release the coins. See the sell-to-M-PESA guide for the full step-through.
