How to Buy Crypto with M-PESA in Kenya

By Dennis Kiptoo · Crypto hub

There are two realistic ways to buy crypto with M-PESA in Kenya. One, Binance P2P, where you buy from another user who receives your M-PESA and releases the crypto through Binance escrow. Two, local on-ramps like Yellow Card, Busha or Luno, where the exchange itself takes your M-PESA and credits your crypto wallet. Route one is cheapest and biggest, route two is easier for a first-time buyer.

Route 1: Binance P2P

Sign up, KYC, open P2P, pick USDT or BTC, filter KES/M-PESA, buy from a trusted advertiser. Cheapest rates and deepest liquidity, but you must respect the escrow rule: never release without your own M-PESA SMS.

Route 2: local on-ramps

Apps like Yellow Card, Busha or Luno let you buy directly with M-PESA. Simpler flow, no dealing with another user, higher spreads. Good for a first Ksh 1,000-5,000 test buy. Not affiliated.

What to buy

Most Kenyans hold USDT (stablecoin pegged to the dollar, the P2P workhorse) or BTC. Only put money you can afford to lose. See the scams page before you send a shilling.
