Crypto Wallets in Kenya (2026)

By Josephine Njeri · Crypto hub

A crypto wallet holds the keys to your coins. There are two kinds. Custodial wallets (Binance, Yellow Card, Busha, Luno) are held by the exchange, easy to use, but you do not control the keys. Self-custody wallets (Trust Wallet, MetaMask, hardware wallets like Ledger) put the keys in your hands, harder to lose but easier to lock yourself out of.

When custodial is fine

Small amounts you plan to trade, coins on the exchange while you decide, and beginners who are still learning. Convenience beats maximalism for a small stake.

When to go self-custody

Anything meaningful you plan to hold for months or years. If the exchange fails, freezes, or gets hacked, custodial coins can vanish. Self-custody removes that risk, but you must protect your recovery phrase absolutely.

How to hold a recovery phrase

Write it on paper, store two copies in two different safe places, never take a photo, never type it into a website, and never share it with anyone claiming to be support. Anyone with the phrase owns the coins.

Frequently asked

Which wallet should I start with?

For self-custody, Trust Wallet on mobile is a common starting point.

Do I need a hardware wallet?

Only if you hold a lot of crypto long-term.

Can I withdraw crypto to M-PESA from my own wallet?

Not directly. Send to an exchange first, then P2P to M-PESA.
