Stablecoins and USDT in Kenya

By Aisha Hassan · Crypto hub

A stablecoin is a crypto token designed to hold a stable value, usually pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. USDT (Tether) is the biggest by far and the workhorse of Kenyan crypto. Stablecoins are used because they combine crypto's speed and reach with the dollar's stability, which is why P2P, remittances and freelance payouts run on them.

Why they matter for Kenyans

Cheaper cross-border transfers, dollar-denominated savings without a dollar bank account, and settlement times measured in minutes not days. Freelancers get paid in USDT, families send USDT across borders and off-ramp to M-PESA locally.

The main stablecoins

USDT (largest, most liquid, longest history, and the most Kenyan liquidity), USDC (issued by Circle, seen as more transparent), DAI (algorithmic-backed). For P2P with M-PESA, USDT is what people trade.

Risks to know

Stablecoins depend on the issuer's reserves. USDT has been questioned repeatedly and has held its peg through cycles, but issuer risk remains. Keep working balances only, and do not stake life savings in any single stablecoin.

Frequently asked

Is USDT the same as dollars?

Close, but issued by a company, backed by its reserves.

Which stablecoin is safest?

USDC is often seen as more transparent; USDT is more liquid.

Can it lose its peg?

Yes, briefly, in stress events. Diversify if you hold a lot.
