How to Sell Crypto to M-PESA in Kenya

By Josephine Njeri · Crypto hub

To sell crypto and get M-PESA, you post a sell offer or take a buy offer on Binance P2P, wait for the buyer to send M-PESA to your phone, confirm your own SMS receipt, then release the crypto from Binance escrow. Alternatively, local on-ramps like Yellow Card or Busha buy your crypto and settle to M-PESA directly.

The Binance P2P sell flow

Open P2P, tap Sell, pick USDT or BTC, set KES / M-PESA. Post an offer or take a buy. When someone matches, chat opens. The buyer sends M-PESA to your number. Wait until your own phone shows the confirmation SMS. Only then release the coins in Binance.

The one trap

Do not release on a screenshot or a pending status. Buyers sometimes forge M-PESA screenshots or send Pochi transactions that can be reversed. Your own M-PESA phone is the source of truth. If it does not show the money in the balance, no release, no exceptions.

Local on-ramp sells

Yellow Card, Busha and Luno let you sell straight to M-PESA in the app. Simpler and one-step, but you get a worse rate than P2P.

Frequently asked

How long to get M-PESA?

5-15 minutes on P2P once a buyer matches.

Can M-PESA payments be reversed?

Yes, in the first minutes. That is why you wait for confirmation, not just a screenshot.

Any tax?

Kenya applies a 10% excise duty on virtual-asset transactions charged by registered VASPs. See the tax page.
