How to Report Crypto Fraud in Kenya

By James Mwangi · Crypto hub

If you were scammed in a crypto transaction, act in this order: 1. Open a dispute inside the exchange (if trade still active). 2. Call Safaricom's fraud line for an M-PESA reversal attempt. 3. File with the DCI Cybercrime Unit. The first two are time-critical, the third builds the paper trail.

Step 1: Exchange dispute

If the trade is still open on Binance, Bybit or another exchange, open a dispute in the chat. Provide screenshots of the promised amount, the M-PESA SMS on your phone (or absence of it), and any off-platform pressure. The exchange holds escrow until it resolves.

Step 2: Safaricom fraud line

Call Safaricom's fraud line as soon as you spot the loss. M-PESA reversals only work in the first minutes, so speed matters. Have your transaction ID, the counterparty number, and the amount ready.

Step 3: DCI Cybercrime Unit

File a report with the DCI Cybercrime Unit. Include screenshots, phone numbers, wallet addresses, and any documentation. Recovery is rare, but the report contributes to the wider disruption effort and may help others.
