How to Open a Crypto Account in Kenya

By James Mwangi · Crypto hub

To open a crypto account in Kenya, pick an exchange (Binance, Yellow Card, Busha, Luno, Bybit), register with a working email, verify a phone number, and complete KYC with your Kenyan national ID or passport and a live selfie. Approval is usually the same day.

What you need

A valid ID (national ID or passport), a phone number that receives SMS, an email, and a room with decent light for the selfie step. That is it.

Common rejections

Blurry ID photo, name mismatch between ID and account, selfie that does not clearly match the ID face. Redo the photo in daylight, use the exact name on the ID, and try again.

After the account opens

Turn on 2FA with an app like Google Authenticator (not SMS if you can avoid it), set a strong password you have not used elsewhere, and be cautious about clicking any "support" links, real exchanges do not DM you first.

Frequently asked

Can I use an ID card?

Yes, national ID or passport work for most exchanges.

How long does approval take?

Usually same day, sometimes minutes.

Do I need dollars first?

No, you fund via M-PESA (P2P or local on-ramp).
