Crypto vs M-PESA: When Each Wins

By Aisha Hassan · Crypto hub

M-PESA and crypto are not competitors; they are complements. M-PESA wins locally for everyday payments in KES. Crypto wins internationally for cross-border transfers, dollar-priced value, and freelance payouts. The Kenyan crypto ecosystem exists because P2P plugs crypto into M-PESA.

Where M-PESA wins

Buying bread, paying utility bills, sending KES to another Kenyan, paying a Paybill. Fast, cheap, universal. Nothing beats it inside Kenya.

Where crypto wins

Receiving USD payments from clients abroad, sending value to a family member overseas, holding a dollar-denominated balance without a dollar account, and moving money in minutes across borders.

How they combine

P2P is the bridge. Crypto comes in from abroad, P2P converts to KES, M-PESA lands on the phone. Or in reverse, M-PESA to KES to crypto to a wallet abroad. The best mental model is a two-lane road, not a competition.
