Absa Timiza: what it is and how to use it

By Arnold Ochieng · Absa Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Absa Bank Kenya.

Timiza is Absa's mobile wallet, on *848# or the Timiza app. We dialled the code on 13 September 2026 and it answers as Absa. The important thing most guides bury: you do not need an Absa bank account. Absa states plainly that Timiza lends to Absa and non-Absa customers alike.

What Timiza does

Absa lists the whole set on its own Timiza page:

  • Instant mobile loans, for Absa and non-Absa customers, with limits that grow.
  • Timiza Goal Savings, earning 6% a year, paid quarterly into your wallet or account.
  • Send money and pay bills.
  • Buy airtime.
  • Insurance, specifically personal accident and last expense cover.
  • Incentives for early repayment, good transacting behaviour and loyalty.

Repaying is its own page: paybill 300067.

The savings account is the underrated part

6% a year, paid quarterly, is a real published rate from a real bank, and it sits inside an app most people only open when they want to borrow. Quarterly payment matters too, because interest paid into the wallet every three months compounds if you leave it there.

It is not the best rate in Kenya. A money market fund usually pays more, and our MMF comparison shows the current yields. But Timiza savings is instant-access from a USSD code on any handset, which no MMF is, and 6% beats leaving the money sitting in the wallet earning nothing.

What a Timiza loan costs, and why we are not printing a rate

We can tell you the structure, because it is stable and Absa describes it: you borrow, a fee is taken at disbursement, excise duty is charged on that fee, and you repay principal plus fee over a short cycle.

We are not going to print a percentage. Here is why, plainly. The build document for this page said about 7.25% a month. Third-party sites currently say an 8.75% access fee. Our own paybill record said 9 to 15% per 30-day cycle. Three sources, three different numbers, and none of them appears on absabank.co.ke, which keeps Timiza pricing in a tariff-guide PDF.

On a loan decision, a number nobody will stand behind is worse than no number. Get yours from the Timiza tariff guide, or from the app before you confirm the loan, where the actual amount payable is shown. We have removed the unverified range from our own paybill page rather than leave it standing.

Timiza reports to the CRB

It is a bank product, not an informal app. Repayment behaviour goes to the Credit Reference Bureaus, and a default here will be visible to every other regulated lender in Kenya, including when you apply for a mortgage years later. The flip side is that repaying on time builds a record that helps you. Our CRB guide covers what happens if it goes wrong.

Getting the app, or not bothering

The Timiza app is on the App Store, Google Play and Huawei AppGallery. It is a different app from the main Absa Banking App, and the two are not interchangeable.

If you are on a feature phone or short of storage, *848# does the core jobs without installing anything.

Timiza has its own support line. Use it

This is worth knowing because almost every guide sends Timiza users to the main Absa switchboard, where they queue behind bank customers for a product the bank team may not handle.

Absa publishes a separate Timiza line: 0709 213000 and 020 4254000, and the email Timiza.Ke@absa.africa. Use those for anything Timiza. Save them before you need them.
