Which Absa paybill do you actually need?

By Arnold Ochieng · Absa Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Absa Bank Kenya.

For your Absa bank account or credit card, the paybill is 303030 and the account is your Absa account number. Absa has three others for different jobs, and paying the wrong one puts your money on the wrong ledger. The table below is the whole answer.

The four, and how to tell them apart

Ask one question: what am I paying into?

  • Into an account you hold at the bank, or a credit card bill: 303030.
  • Against a loan Absa gave you: 300068, with the loan account number, not your current account number.
  • Onto the multi-currency prepaid card: 303069, with the card number.
  • Into Timiza, either repaying a loan or funding the wallet: 300067, with your registered phone number.

All four came from Absa itself. Absa Kenya listed the full set publicly, and separately confirmed 303069 with "card number as account" and 300068 as an Absa collections paybill.

The steps, which are the same whichever number you use

  1. Open M-PESA, or dial *334#.
  2. Choose Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
  3. Business number: the one from the table above.
  4. Account number: the matching reference, also from the table.
  5. Enter the amount, enter your M-PESA PIN, and confirm.
  6. Read the confirmation SMS before you close it. It names the destination, which is your one chance to catch a wrong number.

What happens if you use the wrong one

The money does not vanish, but it does not land where you meant either, and getting it moved is slower than sending it was. Paying a loan into 303030 puts cash in your current account while the loan keeps accruing and, in the worst case, goes into arrears with the payment sitting a few metres away in another ledger.

If you have done it, call +254 722 130120 with the M-PESA transaction code, the amount, and both the number you used and the one you meant. Do not send a second payment until the first is traced. Our Absa paybill not working guide covers the other common failures.

You can also deposit from inside Hello Money

Absa lists "deposit from M-PESA into the account" as a function of *224# itself, so the paybill is not the only route. Either works. The paybill is simpler if you are already in M-PESA, and Hello Money is simpler if you are already in the banking menu.

What it costs

The charge is Safaricom's standard pay-bill tariff for the amount band, not an Absa fee, and Absa does not charge you to receive. Because the tariff is banded rather than a percentage, one payment of KES 10,000 costs less than four of KES 2,500. Our paybill cost calculator gives the exact figure, and the M-PESA charges guide explains the bands.
