School Fees Loans and Pocket-Money Cards

When fees fall due before the money is ready, the banks offer instant options, and for canteen spending there are prepaid cards that keep a child's money safe. Here is how each works, honestly, including the cost side.

Instant school-fees loans

If you hold a salary or business account at Co-op Bank, you can apply for an instant mobile loan of up to KES 1 million through the Co-op Bank app, with no forms and no security. You register free on the app or *667#, check your limit under E-loans, and the money lands in your Co-op app wallet, a virtual account which is your mobile number with a 1 at the end. KCB offers mobile lending too, through the KCB M-PESA loan and the KCB Mobile Loan, for shorter-term needs. Borrow only what you can repay, because these carry interest and short repayment windows.

Pocket-money cards

Co-op's CoopPay Card is a Visa prepaid card you load and give a child for canteen spending. You load it via M-PESA paybill 400200 with the account as a capital P followed by the card account, and only the cost of what the student buys is deducted. You get an SMS on every use and can print mini statements at a Co-op ATM or agent, so you can track spending, and the child can withdraw small amounts at the school agent or a Co-op ATM if they need cash. You do not need a Co-op account to get one, just apply at a branch with your ID copy and KRA PIN.

The sensible view

A fees loan bridges a genuine timing gap but should not become a yearly habit, because interest adds up. A pocket-money card is mostly about safety and tracking rather than borrowing, and it beats sending cash a child can lose. Match the tool to the real need.
