Update Token Meter Yako: What It Is and How to Do It
By Dennis Kiptoo · Updated 12 September 2026
What it actually does
Each token is tied to a code that uniquely identifies it at the point of purchase. The update refreshes that code on your meter, which keeps your units safe by preventing token replication in the system. From your side it is two key-change tokens entered on the keypad.
When your meter needs it
You will typically be prompted, or your meter will stop accepting new tokens. If tokens that worked last month are suddenly rejected, this is a likely cause. The steps are published on kplc.co.ke, or call 97771 and they will talk you through it.
It is free, and that is the security point
Because the exercise is unfamiliar and involves someone giving you codes to type in, it is fertile ground for fraud. Kenya Power charges nothing for it. Anyone asking for a fee, or for your M-PESA PIN, to perform an update is running a scam. Get the codes from Kenya Power's own channels only.
