KPLC Prepaid vs Postpaid: Which Meter Do You Have?

By James Mwangi · Updated 12 September 2026

How to tell which you are

Look at the meter. A prepaid meter has a keypad for typing in token codes and a display showing units remaining. If instead a bill reaches you every month by SMS, email or post, you are postpaid. If you are still unsure, dial *977# and see which options apply to your number.

Which suits you

Prepaid suits households that want to control and budget electricity spend, because you cannot overspend what you have not bought, and there is no bill to fall behind on. Postpaid suits people who would rather pay once a month and not think about topping up, and it is standard for larger premises. The trade-off is that postpaid lets arrears build up while prepaid simply stops when the units run out.

Switching between them

You can apply to Kenya Power to change meter type. Start on the self-service portal or by calling 97771. It involves a meter change, so it is not instant.
