KPLC Token Scams and How to Avoid Them
By Dennis Kiptoo · Updated 12 September 2026
The scams that actually run in Kenya
Fake Kenya Power pages and phone numbers on social media, positioned to catch people searching for customer care. People selling discounted or bonus tokens, which do not exist, because the tariff is regulated and nobody can legitimately sell you units below it. Callers impersonating Kenya Power to extract your M-PESA PIN or an OTP. And, around the meter-update exercise, people charging for a service that is free.
The rules that keep you safe
- Pay only 888880 (tokens) or 888888 (postpaid bills), or use *977# or the app.
- Never pay a personal M-PESA number for electricity.
- Treat any discounted or bonus token offer as fake.
- Never share your M-PESA PIN or an OTP. Kenya Power does not ask.
- Get customer care numbers from kplc.co.ke, not from a social media post.
If you have been defrauded
Report through Kenya Power's confidential channel at kplc.confideapp.online, call 97771, and report to the DCI. Keep every message and transaction code. Report it even if the amount was small, because the same number is usually working many people at once.
