How to Apply for a New KPLC Electricity Connection

By Dennis Kiptoo · Updated 12 September 2026

The three connection types

Residential for homes, generally below 25 kVA. Commercial and SME for small and medium businesses, typically up to 100 to 200 kVA. Industrial for large loads. Which one you fall under decides the fee, the documents and the survey required.

What you need

Your national ID and KRA PIN, details of the premises, and, depending on the connection type, a wiring certificate from a licensed electrician plus site information. Fees and required documents vary by type and by how far the premises are from the existing grid, so confirm the current list on the portal before you start.

What happens after you pay

Kenya Power surveys the site, then installs the meter, prepaid or postpaid, and connects supply. Keep the application reference; it is what any follow-up call will need.

Apply only through the official portals

New connections attract a particular kind of fraud, because the sums are larger than a token purchase and applicants are often unfamiliar with the process. Use selfservice.kplc.co.ke or kplc.ecitizen.go.ke and pay through the portal. Nobody legitimate will ask you to send a connection fee to a personal M-PESA number.
