DStv Kenya runs on M-PESA paybill 444900, with your 10-digit smartcard or IUC number as the account. When the payment goes through but the decoder still shows "subscription expired" or an error code, the fix is almost always on the decoder side, not at MultiChoice. This guide covers the five most common failure modes, the exact error codes you might see on screen, the ExtraView gotchas that catch multi-decoder households, the scam paybill variants targeting DStv customers, and the escalation path when the basics do not resolve.
Three quick checks before you call anyone
Run these in order. Most DStv complaints clear at one of the first three steps.
- Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character code? If yes (e.g.
RG7HX9BC2K), the payment is accepted. The issue is on the DStv decoder side. If no SMS arrived after 5 minutes, the payment failed and your wallet was not debited. - Does the SMS recipient name read MULTICHOICE KENYA LTD? That is the legitimate recipient of paybill 444900. If the SMS shows any other name, you paid the wrong paybill. Reverse it (see below) and retry with 444900 exactly.
- Does the IUC in the SMS match the decoder you want to activate? In multi-decoder homes (ExtraView), the most common failure is paying one smartcard while watching another. Eject the smartcard from the decoder you want activated, confirm the 10-digit number against the one in your SMS.
Package amount mismatch is the second-biggest issue
DStv activates only when the amount paid matches the current monthly package price exactly. Underpay by KES 50 and the decoder will not activate the higher package; it falls back to the next package down whose price you covered. Overpay and the excess credits to your next cycle.
2026 DStv Kenya package prices (confirm on dstv.com/ke before paying):
| Package | Monthly (KES) |
|---|---|
| DStv Padi | 1,200 |
| DStv Lite | 1,500 |
| DStv Family | 2,500 |
| DStv Compact | 4,200 |
| DStv Compact Plus | 6,500 |
| DStv Premium | 11,700 |
| DStv Asia | 6,500 |
DStv changes its prices from time to time. If DStv recently raised prices, paying the old amount activates the next package down. Top up the difference to bump back to your intended package, no need to repay the whole amount.
DStv error codes decoded
E16: no subscription detected
The decoder cannot see an active subscription. After a successful M-PESA payment, this almost always clears with a hard reset (unplug 30 seconds, plug back). If E16 persists 15 minutes after the SMS, the payment did not credit your IUC. WhatsApp DStv on +254 755 896 248 with the M-PESA code and your smartcard number.
E30: smartcard pairing issue
The smartcard is not paired to this decoder. Common after smartcard replacements or moving a card between decoders. Call DStv care for a re-pair (called a "rehit") within minutes.
E48-32: no signal
Not a payment problem. The decoder is not getting a satellite signal. Check the LNB cable at the back of the decoder, then check dish alignment. Heavy rain causes temporary E48-32 that clears with weather. A nudged dish is the most common persistent cause; a professional realignment in Nairobi costs roughly KES 2,500.
E142: firmware update needed
Leave the decoder on the search screen for 30 minutes. It pulls a new firmware over the satellite, then activates your payment automatically.
Money taken, DStv not activated
The most common pain. M-PESA SMS confirmed payment, decoder still shows expired. Run this sequence:
- Verify the M-PESA SMS recipient name. Should read MULTICHOICE KENYA LTD. If not, you paid the wrong paybill, reverse and retry.
- Verify the IUC in the SMS matches the decoder. Especially important in ExtraView households.
- Verify the amount matches the current package price. See the table above. If underpaid, top up the difference to bump to the intended package.
- Hard reset the decoder. Unplug 30 seconds, plug back in, wait 10 to 15 minutes.
- Dial *423# from the phone number registered on your DStv account. DStv's contact page lists it for fixing errors and reconnecting.
- Open the MyDStv app. DStv's contact page lists it for managing your account.
- Last resort: WhatsApp DStv on +254 755 896 248 with the M-PESA transaction code and IUC. They can force-activate within minutes.
ExtraView linking gotcha
ExtraView lets you connect up to two extra decoders to one main subscription. Each extra decoder has its own monthly access fee on top of the main package; check the current amount in the MyDStv app or on dstv.com/en-ke. If the extra-decoder access fee lapses, the link breaks and the extra decoders show E16 even when the main decoder is fully paid.
To re-link extras after a lapse:
- WhatsApp DStv on +254 755 896 248.
- Give them all IUCs (main + extras).
- Ask them to re-link the extra decoders.
- Future payments should include the extras as a single combined charge to the main IUC.
Scam paybills targeting DStv customers
DStv is a top-search paybill which makes it a target for look-alike scams. The legitimate paybill is 444900. Variants being pushed by scammers via SMS, WhatsApp, even printed posters in some shops:
- 444901, 444902: trailing-digit variants
- 449400: digits swapped
- 444090: digit reordered
- 444000, 444444: simplified look-alikes
Confirm 444900 on the My DStv app, dstv.com/ke, or our DStv paybill page before paying. Do not trust paybills sent via WhatsApp. If you paid a wrong paybill and the SMS recipient name is not MULTICHOICE KENYA LTD, call Safaricom on 100 or 200 the same day.
Reversing a wrong DStv payment
Safaricom's 456 self-reversal does not cover paybill payments. Its M-PESA Reversal page (updated 1 September 2025) lists 456 for person-to-person sends and airtime bought for yourself, requested within 24 hours.
- Call Safaricom on 100 (prepay) or 200 (postpay) with the M-PESA transaction code.
- Contact MultiChoice as well, with the transaction code and the smartcard number you paid.
- The recipient is asked for consent before a reversal completes, so the payment comes back only if MultiChoice (or whoever received it) agrees.
Safaricom's pages do not list a fee for asking for a reversal and do not say the original transaction fee comes back.

FAQ
What is the official DStv paybill in Kenya?
The official DStv Kenya paybill is 444900, owned by MultiChoice Kenya. If you paid any other number, the payment did not reach DStv; call Safaricom on 100 or 200 the same day to ask for a reversal. Verify the number on dstv.com/ke or our DStv paybill page.
I paid 444900 but my DStv decoder still shows "subscription expired". What now?
Unplug the decoder for 30 seconds and plug back in. This forces a fresh signal pull from the satellite, which is what carries the new subscription. Most reactivation failures resolve at this step. If it is still inactive after 15 minutes, dial *423# from the phone number registered on your DStv account to fix errors or reconnect, or use Fix Errors Online in MyDStv.
My DStv shows error E16 after payment. What does it mean?
E16 means "no subscription detected". After a successful M-PESA payment, this almost always clears with a hard reset of the decoder. Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait 5 to 10 minutes. If E16 persists for over 15 minutes after the M-PESA SMS, the payment did not credit your IUC. Call DStv care with the M-PESA code and they can verify and force-activate.
My DStv shows E30. What does it mean?
E30 means "smartcard pairing issue". The smartcard you have in this decoder is not paired to this specific decoder model. Common after a smartcard replacement, or when you move a smartcard between two decoders. Fix: call DStv care, give them your IUC, they re-pair within minutes (a process called "rehit").
My DStv shows E48-32. Is this a payment issue?
No. E48-32 means "no signal", a hardware or weather problem. Your payment went through fine. Check the LNB cable at the back of the decoder, then check the satellite dish alignment. Heavy rain causes temporary E48-32 that clears when weather does. A nudged dish (kids playing, gardener, wind) is the most common cause; a dish realignment costs roughly KES 2,500 in Nairobi.
My second decoder (ExtraView) shows E16 after I paid for the main one. Why?
ExtraView decoders only share the main subscription if the ExtraView linking is current. If the monthly ExtraView access fee has lapsed, the link breaks. Your main decoder activates, the extras stay in E16. Contact DStv on WhatsApp (+254 755 896 248) to re-link, and pay the extras going forward as part of your monthly cycle.
I paid for DStv Compact but I am only seeing Family channels. Why?
The amount you paid did not match the current Compact price exactly, so DStv credited your account to the nearest package down. In 2026, Compact is KES 4,200; if you paid KES 4,150 or KES 4,100, you got Family. Pay the difference to bump to Compact, no need to repay the whole amount.
Can I move a payment from a wrong IUC to the right one?
Ask DStv. WhatsApp DStv on +254 755 896 248 (have your smartcard number and surname ready) or use the web chat, and give the M-PESA transaction code, the wrong IUC the payment went to and the correct IUC. DStv Kenya's contact page lists no phone line.
How long does DStv take to reactivate after M-PESA payment?
Usually within 5 minutes if the decoder is powered on and connected to the satellite signal. If the decoder has been unplugged for several days, allow 10 to 15 minutes. Peak times (Friday evenings, weekends, end of month) can stretch to 30 minutes during heavy traffic.
Can I reverse a wrong DStv payment via M-PESA?
Not through 456: Safaricom lists its 456 self-reversal for person-to-person sends and airtime bought for yourself, within 24 hours. For a paybill payment, call Safaricom on 100 (prepay) or 200 (postpay) with the transaction code, and contact MultiChoice too. Safaricom says the recipient is asked for consent before a reversal completes, so MultiChoice (or whoever received the money) has to agree.
