GOtv paybill 423655 not working? Decoder fixes that actually work (2026)

GOtv Kenya runs on M-PESA paybill 423655, with your 10-digit IUC number as the account. When the payment goes through but the decoder still shows "subscription expired", the fix is almost always a hard reset of the decoder, not a Safaricom problem and not a second payment. This guide covers the five most common failure modes, the exact error codes you might see on screen, the look-alike paybill scams targeting GOtv customers, and the escalation path when the basics do not resolve.

Three things to check before you call anyone

Run these in order. Most GOtv "not working" complaints clear up at one of the first three steps.

  1. Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character code? If yes (e.g. RG7HX9BC2K), the payment is accepted. The issue is on the GOtv decoder side. If no SMS arrived after 5 minutes, the payment failed and your wallet was not debited. Try again, the network was probably down.
  2. Does the SMS recipient name say MULTICHOICE KENYA LTD? That is the legitimate recipient of paybill 423655. If the SMS shows a different name (something like a random business or an individual), you paid the wrong paybill. Reverse it (see below) and retry with 423655 exactly.
  3. Is the IUC in the SMS the same IUC printed on the back of the decoder? In multi-decoder households this is the single most common failure. Eject the smartcard and confirm the 10-digit number against what you typed.

Package amount mismatch is the second-biggest issue

GOtv activates only when the amount paid matches the current monthly package price exactly. Underpay by even KES 50 and the decoder will not reactivate. Overpay and the excess credits to your next cycle, the current month does not activate until the underlying month is fully paid.

2026 GOtv Kenya package prices, confirm on gotvafrica.com/ke before paying:

PackageMonthly (KES)
GOtv Lite410
GOtv Value800
GOtv Plus1,300
GOtv Max1,950
GOtv Supa2,800
GOtv Supa Plus3,500

Prices typically change in January or April. If GOtv recently raised prices, paying the old amount will not activate. Confirm the current price on the GOtv app or website before paying.

GOtv error codes and what they mean

E16: no subscription detected

The decoder cannot see an active subscription on the signal. After a successful payment, this almost always clears with a hard reset (unplug 30 seconds, plug back). If E16 persists an hour after the SMS, with the decoder switched on, contact GOtv care with the M-PESA code.

E30: smartcard pairing issue

The smartcard is not being recognised by this decoder. Happens when a smartcard from one decoder is moved to another, or after a smartcard replacement. The fix is a re-pair via GOtv care; they can issue a "rehit" within minutes.

E48 family: no signal

Not a payment problem. The decoder is not receiving the satellite signal at all. Check the LNB cable at the back of the decoder, then check the antenna alignment. Heavy rain or wind can also cause temporary E48 that clears when weather does. A nudged antenna is the most common cause after years of mounting; a professional re-alignment costs roughly KES 1,500 to 2,500.

E142: firmware update needed

Leave the decoder on the search screen for 30 minutes. It pulls a new firmware over the satellite. After firmware updates, your payment should reactivate automatically. If it does not, hard reset and retry.

This is the most common pain. The M-PESA SMS confirmed the payment, but the decoder still shows expired. Run this sequence:

  1. Verify the M-PESA SMS recipient. Should be "MULTICHOICE KENYA LTD". If it is anything else, you paid the wrong paybill, reverse and retry.
  2. Verify the IUC in the SMS matches the decoder you want to activate. Eject smartcard, read the number off the back.
  3. Verify the amount matches the current package price. See the table above. If you paid too little, top up the difference with a second M-PESA payment to 423655 using the same IUC.
  4. Hard reset the decoder. Unplug 30 seconds. Plug back in. Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the satellite signal to download the activation.
  5. Send the IUC to 30445. SMS-based re-authorisation pull, free of charge, works within minutes.
  6. Dial *423# from your registered Safaricom line for the GOtv USSD self-service menu. Choose Reactivate.
  7. Last resort: call GOtv Kenya care on +254 711 066 600 with the M-PESA transaction code and IUC. They can force-activate within minutes.

Scam paybills targeting GOtv customers

GOtv has a high-traffic paybill which makes it a target for look-alike scams. The legitimate paybill is 423655. Numbers being pushed by scammers via SMS, WhatsApp, and even posters in some agent shops:

  • 423656: single digit off, no legitimate GOtv routing
  • 423650: not GOtv
  • 432655: digits swapped
  • 423658, 423659, 423657: trailing-digit variants

Confirm 423655 on the GOtv app, gotvafrica.com/ke, or our own GOtv paybill page before paying. Do not trust paybills sent via WhatsApp even if the message claims to be from GOtv. If you paid a wrong paybill and the SMS recipient name is not MULTICHOICE KENYA LTD, call Safaricom on 100 or 200 the same day.

Reversing a wrong GOtv payment

If the payment went to the wrong paybill, the wrong IUC, or in any other error case where GOtv care cannot resolve, ask Safaricom for a reversal. The 456 self-reversal does not cover paybill payments: Safaricom's M-PESA Reversal page (updated 1 September 2025) lists 456 for person-to-person sends and airtime bought for yourself, requested within 24 hours.

  1. Call Safaricom on 100 (prepay) or 200 (postpay), or chat with Zuri on WhatsApp (0722 000 100), with the 10-character M-PESA transaction code from the SMS.
  2. Contact GOtv as well, with the transaction code and the IUC number you paid.
  3. The recipient is asked for consent before a reversal completes, so the payment comes back only if MultiChoice (or whoever received it) agrees.

Safaricom's pages do not list a fee for asking for a reversal and do not say the original transaction fee comes back.

How to escalate to GOtv Kenya

When the self-service fixes do not work, GOtv care can usually resolve within minutes. Have your M-PESA transaction code and IUC ready before you call.

  • Phone: +254 711 066 600 (24/7 for activation issues)
  • SMS reactivation: text your IUC to 30445 from your registered line
  • USSD self-service: dial *423# for the GOtv menu
  • WhatsApp: +254 711 066 600 (same number, message-based)
  • Email: kenya@multichoice.co.za
  • Walk-in: MultiChoice Kenya, Royal Ngao House, Hospital Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi

FAQ

What is the official GOtv paybill in Kenya?

The official GOtv Kenya paybill is 423655, owned by MultiChoice Kenya. If you used any other number, the payment did not reach GOtv and will need to be reversed. Verify the number on gotvafrica.com/ke or on any past M-PESA SMS from a previous GOtv payment.

I paid 423655 but my decoder still says "subscription expired". What now?

Unplug the decoder for 30 seconds and plug back in. This forces it to download a fresh signal from the satellite. Most reactivation failures resolve at this step. If it is still inactive after 15 minutes, dial *423# from your registered Safaricom line to request a re-authorisation push, or text your IUC to 30445.

Why does my GOtv say "no subscription" even though I just paid?

Three possibilities, in order of frequency. (1) The decoder is not powered on or is disconnected from the antenna, so it cannot receive the reactivation signal. (2) You paid for the wrong IUC, common in multi-decoder households where you have more than one smartcard. (3) The amount paid does not exactly match the current GOtv package price. Check the SMS confirmation, verify the IUC matches the decoder, and confirm the amount against current prices.

My M-PESA confirmation shows the wrong IUC. Can I move the payment to the right one?

Yes, but it requires GOtv Kenya customer care. Call +254 711 066 600 with your M-PESA transaction code, the wrong IUC the payment went to, and the correct IUC. They can manually transfer between accounts within 24 hours. The first IUC will be credited with the next monthly cycle if it belongs to another active GOtv user.

GOtv shows error E16 (no subscription detected) after I paid. What does that mean?

E16 means the decoder is not seeing an active subscription on the satellite signal. After a successful M-PESA payment, this almost always clears with a hard reset: unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in. If E16 persists, give it an hour before assuming the worst: GOtv’s own payment page says Safaricom payments are reconciled “at least hourly”, not instantly, and the decoder has to be switched on to receive the signal. GOtv also lists a third cause people miss, outdated decoder software. After an hour with the decoder on, contact GOtv with the M-PESA code.

GOtv decoder shows error E48 or E48-32. Is this a payment problem?

No. E48 family errors mean "no signal", usually a misaligned antenna, disconnected LNB cable, or weather interference. Your payment went through fine. Check the cable at the back of the decoder, then check the antenna alignment. Heavy rain can also cause temporary E48; it clears once the weather does.

Can I reverse a wrong GOtv payment?

Not through 456: Safaricom lists its 456 self-reversal for person-to-person sends and airtime bought for yourself, within 24 hours. For a paybill payment, call Safaricom on 100 (prepay) or 200 (postpay) with the transaction code, and contact GOtv too. Safaricom says the recipient is asked for consent before a reversal completes, so MultiChoice (or whoever received the money) has to agree.

How long does GOtv take to reactivate after M-PESA payment?

Often within 5 minutes, but GOtv only commits to updating Safaricom payments “at least hourly”, so a fast activation is the best case rather than the promise. The decoder must be switched on, which GOtv states explicitly. If it has been unplugged for days, allow longer for it to pull the activation signal.

I get "Paybill not found" when paying 423655. What do I do?

You probably typed the number slightly wrong. The official GOtv paybill is 423655 (four-two-three-six-five-five). Common typos: 423656, 423650, 432655. Try again with each digit verified. If the same error persists with the correct number, Safaricom may be having a temporary outage. Wait 15 minutes or check @Safaricom_Care on X for status updates.
