How this calculator works
The calculator handles the three ways Kenyan bettors usually place bets and ladders them through the current Kenyan tax model. Pick your mode at the top, enter your numbers, and see the payout broken down step by step — including which taxes apply where.
Single bet mode
One stake, one bet, one set of odds. Payout is straightforward: stake × odds = gross winnings. The stake itself is not taxed at bet time — what you put on the bet is what gets matched against the odds. The 5% excise hits twice at the wallet boundary: once when you funded the wallet (deposit excise) and once when you pull the winnings to M-PESA (withdrawal excise). Toggle the deposit-excise line on to see the all-in cost.
Accumulator mode
Multiple legs combined into one bet. Every leg must win. The combined odds multiply across legs (a 3-leg accumulator at 2.0 × 1.8 × 2.2 = 7.92 combined odds), and the gross payout is stake × combined odds. Calculator supports 2 to 20 legs.
Jackpot share mode
For SportPesa Mega Jackpot, Betika Grand Jackpot, Mozzartbet Mega Jackpot, and similar fixed-pool jackpots. Enter the announced prize pool and the number of winners. Each winner's share is pool ÷ winners. Then the 5% withdrawal excise and the (optional) 20% withholding tax on profit reduce the gross share to your net to M-PESA.
Kenyan betting tax model (May 2026)
Kenya taxes betting at three points in the bet lifecycle. The calculator handles the two on the payout side; the third (deposit excise) is already paid by the time you wager.
| Tax | Rate | When | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Excise on deposit | 5% | When you top up your betting wallet from M-PESA | In force |
| Excise on stake | 5% | At the moment you place the bet | In force |
| Excise on withdrawal | 5% | When winnings move from betting wallet to M-PESA | In force |
| Withholding tax on winnings | 20% | On the profit (winnings minus stake) | Finance Bill 2026 proposal — not yet law |
Three worked examples
Example 1 — Single bet
You stake KES 500 on Manchester City to beat Liverpool at odds of 2.10.
- Stake excise: 500 × 5% = KES 25
- Effective wager: KES 475
- If City wins: 475 × 2.10 = KES 998 gross
- Withdrawal excise: 998 × 5% = KES 50
- (If WHT applies on profit of 998 − 500 = 498: 498 × 20% = KES 100)
- Net to M-PESA (no WHT): KES 948
- Net to M-PESA (with WHT): KES 853
Example 2 — Three-leg accumulator
You stake KES 200 on a three-leg accumulator: Arsenal at 1.80, Real Madrid at 2.00, and Bayern Munich at 1.50. Combined odds: 5.40.
- Stake excise: 200 × 5% = KES 10
- Effective wager: KES 190
- If all three win: 190 × 5.40 = KES 1,026 gross
- Withdrawal excise: 1,026 × 5% = KES 51
- Net to M-PESA (no WHT): KES 975
Example 3 — SportPesa Mega Jackpot share
SportPesa Mega Jackpot pool of KES 250,000,000. Two people correctly predict all 17 games — the pool splits into two KES 125,000,000 shares.
- Your gross share: KES 125,000,000
- Withdrawal excise: 125,000,000 × 5% = KES 6,250,000
- (If WHT applies on the whole share: 125,000,000 × 20% = KES 25,000,000)
- Net to M-PESA (no WHT): KES 118,750,000
- Net to M-PESA (with WHT): KES 95,000,000
Responsible gambling reminder
The calculator shows what you would receive if you win. The probability of winning a 3-leg accumulator at average odds is roughly 1 in 8 (12%). The probability of a SportPesa Mega Jackpot is roughly 1 in 130 million. Run the math the other way too: how much have you staked, total, over the last 12 months versus how much have you won back. If your honest answer is more on the staked side than the won side, betting is costing you, not paying you.
