Absa personal loans
By Arnold Ochieng · Absa Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Absa Bank Kenya.
Absa lends unsecured to salaried and qualifying customers, with the amount, rate and term set by your income and credit profile. Apply in the app, on internet banking, at a branch or through Absa's personal loan page, which carries its own calculator.
Use the total cost of credit calculator, not the rate
This is the most useful thing on this page. Kenyan banks are required to disclose the total cost of credit, and there is an industry calculator at costofcredit.co.ke that Absa links to from its own footer.
It matters because the headline interest rate is not the cost. Add the arrangement fee, excise duty on that fee, credit life insurance, and any legal or valuation costs, and two loans quoting the same rate can differ by tens of thousands of shillings over the term. Put the same amount and term into the calculator for each lender you are considering and compare the total. Our loan repayment calculator and amortisation schedule show where the money goes month by month.
What to bring
- Your National ID or passport.
- Your KRA PIN.
- Proof of income, normally recent payslips and bank statements. If you bank elsewhere, expect to provide statements from that bank.
- For a check-off or employer-scheme loan, whatever your employer requires. Our check-off loans guide covers how those differ.
Why we do not publish an Absa rate
It reports to the CRB
Before you commit, ask these
- The total amount payable over the full term, in shillings, not the rate.
- The arrangement or processing fee, and whether excise duty is charged on it.
- Whether credit life insurance is compulsory, what it costs, and who underwrites it.
- The early settlement position, and whether clearing early actually saves interest. Our early settlement calculator shows whether it is worth it.
- What happens at the first missed payment, and how long before it is reported.
