Absa digital banking: app, internet banking and Abby

By Arnold Ochieng · Absa Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Absa Bank Kenya.

Absa runs four digital channels and they do different jobs. The Absa Banking App for everyday banking, internet banking at online.absabank.co.ke for anything involving a keyboard, Hello Money *224# when you have no data, and Abby on WhatsApp for quick questions.

Abby, on WhatsApp

Absa's digital assistant answers on WhatsApp at +254 710 130000. Absa describes it as able to pay a friend, buy airtime and check balances.

Save that number now, because the security value is in having it saved before somebody messages you claiming to be Absa. A message from a number that is not this one, asking for a PIN or an OTP, is not Absa. Abby will never ask for your PIN or a one-time password either.

QR cash withdrawal, no card needed

Absa has added a QR code cash withdrawal to the app: scan at the ATM and withdraw with the phone, no card. Useful when you have left the card at home, and safer at a machine you are unsure about, since there is no card to be skimmed or retained. This is a different thing from CashSend on *224#, which is for sending cash to somebody else.

Contactless card payments

Absa contactless cards work at any terminal showing the contactless symbol: hold the card over the reader, no PIN, no swipe, no signature. Convenient, and worth understanding the trade-off, which is that a lost contactless card can be tapped by whoever finds it up to the per-transaction limit. Report a lost card immediately on +254 722 130120 rather than waiting to see if it turns up.

Getting onto internet banking

Register at online.absabank.co.ke, and log in at the same domain. Business customers use Absa Access, and there is a separate prepaid cardholder login for the multi-currency and student cards, covered on our cards page.

Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you made. Do not reach your bank through a search result or a link in an email, which is the single most effective habit against phishing.

Getting the app

The Absa Banking App is on the App Store, Google Play and Huawei AppGallery.

Note it is a different app from Timiza, which has its own listing. Installing one does not give you the other, and a Timiza account is not an Absa bank login. See the Timiza page.

PesaLink, for sending to other banks

Absa carries PesaLink on both mobile and internet banking, for real-time transfers to any Kenyan bank, around the clock. For any decent-sized transfer to another bank account, PesaLink usually beats routing through a mobile wallet on both cost and speed. Our PesaLink vs M-PESA comparison works through when each wins.
