Absa cards, and how to load them

By Arnold Ochieng · Absa Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Absa Bank Kenya.

The one people search for: top up the Absa multi-currency prepaid card from M-PESA on paybill 303069, with the card number as the account. Absa confirmed that format itself. Credit card bills go to 303030, the same paybill as a bank account.

The multi-currency prepaid card

A travel card that holds several currencies, tops up from M-PESA or the app, and is managed through a separate prepaid cardholder login on absabank.co.ke, not the main internet banking login.

The reason to use one instead of your ordinary debit card abroad is the exchange rate. Loading the currency before you travel fixes the rate at that moment, where a debit card converts at whatever rate applies on the day, plus a foreign transaction charge. It also caps your exposure: if the card is compromised, the thief reaches only what is loaded on it, not your current account.

The student prepaid card

Aimed at high school and university students, and genuinely useful for a parent who wants to send money without handing over access to an account. You load it, they spend what is on it, and there is no overdraft and no way to reach anything else. For a boarding school or a first year away from home, that is a better answer than sending cash by M-PESA and hoping.

Credit cards

Absa credit cards carry rewards and lifestyle benefits, and Absa provides a credit card calculator on its site for working out repayments.

The thing worth knowing before you take one: pay the full statement balance each month, not the minimum. Paying the minimum is how a card turns into expensive long-term debt, because interest then runs on the whole outstanding balance. Used as a payment tool and cleared monthly, a credit card is close to free and gives you a dispute mechanism a debit card does not. Used as a loan, it is one of the more costly ways to borrow. Repayments go to paybill 303030.

Contactless, and its trade-off

Absa cards do contactless: tap at any terminal showing the symbol, no PIN, no signature. The trade-off is that a lost card can be tapped by whoever picks it up, up to the per-transaction limit, before you notice. Report a lost card the moment you know, on +254 722 130120.

Which paybill for which card

Worth being precise, because the two card paybills are one digit apart in people's memory and completely different in practice. The multi-currency prepaid card takes 303069 with the card number. A credit card bill takes 303030, the ordinary Absa paybill. Our full paybill guide has all four side by side.
