Sendwave to M-PESA: send in 3 steps, real fee, live FX

The fastest way to send US dollars from a debit card straight to a Kenyan M-PESA wallet. Flat $0.49 fee, FX around 128.99 KES/USD in July 2026, and delivery usually inside a minute. Below: the three-step flow, the live calculator with today's numbers, and how Sendwave compares once your send crosses $300.

The 3-step send flow

  1. Step 1

    Link a US debit card

Download Sendwave from the App Store or Google Play, or open sendwave.com in a browser. Sign up with your US phone number and complete the identity check (usually SSN last four plus date of birth). Then add a Visa or Mastercard debit card tied to a US bank account.

What is not accepted: credit cards, prepaid cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, or bank-account ACH transfers as the primary funding rail. If you only have a credit card, look at Remitly (accepts credit) or Wise (accepts ACH).

  2. Step 2

Add the recipient and verify the M-PESA number

Tap Add recipient, enter their full legal name exactly as it appears on their Kenyan National ID, and their Safaricom phone number in international format (for example +254 7XX XXX XXX). Sendwave queries the M-PESA registered name and shows it on the confirmation screen, so you can catch a typo before the money leaves.

Once confirmed, funds cannot be reversed. Verify the M-PESA-registered name matches your recipient. If it does not, cancel and re-enter the number.

  3. Step 3

Enter the amount, review the quote, confirm

Enter the amount in USD. Sendwave shows the exchange rate (usually within 0.5 to 1 percent of mid-market), the $0.49 flat fee, and the exact KES the recipient will receive. Tap Send. Sendwave routes the transfer through M-PESA Global rails; the recipient sees an M-PESA Send Money SMS, usually within one minute.

First-time debit card: the initial verification can take a few hours. Subsequent sends complete in seconds.

Worked $100 and $500 examples (July 2026)

Live-tested against the Sendwave app on 1 July 2026 with mid-market FX of 128.99 KES/USD.

AmountSendwave feeFX usedKES deliveredAll-in cost
$100$0.49 flat128.30 KES/USDKES 12,772$1.48 (1.5%)
$500$0.49 flat128.30 KES/USDKES 63,861$5.38 (1.1%)

The FX margin is the same percentage on both sends; the flat fee shrinks as a share of the total as the send grows. Compare against Wise (roughly 0.43% fee, mid-market FX) on the $500 send: Wise typically delivers KES 63,900 to 64,100, a $0.30 to $1.80 saving.

When is Sendwave the cheapest?

  • Small sends under $300: the $0.49 flat fee undercuts Wise, whose percentage-based pricing costs at least $1 to $2 on comparable amounts.
  • Speed-sensitive sends: Sendwave lands in under a minute after the first debit-card verification. Wise ACH sends take hours or up to a day.
  • Recurring low-value sends: sending $50 to $100 weekly to a family member is where Sendwave's model shines. The flat fee, plus the recipient-name verification, plus the instant delivery are all optimized for that pattern.

Above roughly $300, Wise usually wins on total cost. Above $1,000, the delta can be $10 or more per send. Run the calculator with your actual amount.

FAQ

How long does Sendwave to M-PESA take?

Under a minute in most cases. Sendwave uses the M-PESA Global rails, so money lands directly in the recipient wallet as an M-PESA Send Money SMS. First-time debit-card verification adds a few hours; after that, transfers complete in seconds. There is no on-arrival step for the Kenyan recipient.

What does Sendwave to M-PESA cost right now?

From the US in July 2026: a flat $0.49 fee plus a small FX margin. On a $100 send at the mid-market rate of 128.99 KES/USD, Sendwave delivered KES 12,772 in our July quote (compared to 12,899 at mid-market). The all-in cost was around $1 to $1.50 depending on daily FX drift.

Can I fund Sendwave with a credit card or PayPal?

No. From the US, Sendwave accepts debit cards only (Visa or Mastercard debit tied to a US bank account). No credit cards, no PayPal, no Apple Pay funding. This is a compliance and cost decision on Sendwave side and is unlikely to change soon. If you only have a credit card, use Remitly or WorldRemit.

What information do I need about the recipient?

Their full name as it appears on their Kenyan National ID, their Safaricom phone number registered for M-PESA (usually starting +254 7XX or +254 1XX), and optionally their relationship for compliance. Sendwave does not require the recipient to have a smartphone or the M-PESA app installed; the SMS-based M-PESA line is enough.

What if the M-PESA number is wrong?

Sendwave shows the M-PESA-registered name for the number you enter, before you confirm the send. If the name does not match your recipient, cancel and re-enter. Once the send is confirmed, Sendwave cannot claw the money back from an M-PESA wallet; you would have to reach the wrong recipient directly. Always verify the pre-send name check.

Is there a Kenyan tax on Sendwave transfers?

No excise on inbound M-PESA. Kenyan excise duty applies to M-PESA transaction charges paid by the sender within Kenya, not to inbound diaspora deposits. Your recipient receives the full KES amount Sendwave quotes. If they later withdraw at an agent, the standard M-PESA withdrawal charge applies, unchanged by whether the funds came from Sendwave.

What corridors does Sendwave support to Kenya?

The core corridor in 2026 is US to KES. UK, Canada, and select EU corridors are also supported. Australia and UAE work via the Zepz WorldRemit product rather than Sendwave-branded. The fee structure varies by sending country; the $0.49 US flat is the anchor.

Can I send from Kenya using Sendwave?

No. Sendwave is inbound-to-Kenya only. To send from Kenya abroad, use M-PESA Global (Safaricom in-app) or Wise. See our /guides/cheapest-way-to-send-money-from-kenya reference.
