Sendwave fees: $0.49 is real, but Sendwave earns on FX

The honest cost of sending money to Kenya with Sendwave. Yes, the flat fee is $0.49 from the US. And yes, Sendwave also takes a 0.5 to 1 percent FX margin. The total is still competitive under $300; above that Wise usually beats it. Worked examples below.

The two-part fee structure

Part 1

Flat transfer fee: $0.49

Charged per send from the US, regardless of amount. Shown on the confirmation screen before you tap Send. This is the "fee" Sendwave advertises. It is the smaller of the two costs on most sends.

Part 2

FX margin: 0.5 to 1 percent

Built into the exchange rate. If the mid-market FX is 128.99 KES/USD, Sendwave might show you 128.30 KES/USD. That 0.7 KES/USD gap is where Sendwave earns on volume. On a $100 send it is roughly $0.50; on a $500 send roughly $2.50; on a $1,000 send roughly $5.

Worked example: $100 send from the US

Live-tested against the Sendwave app on 1 July 2026 with mid-market FX of 128.99 KES/USD.

You send$100.00
Flat Sendwave fee$0.49
Amount converted$99.51
Sendwave FX rate applied128.30 KES/USD
Mid-market FX rate (reference)128.99 KES/USD
Recipient getsKES 12,772
All-in cost$1.48 (1.48%)

Math: at mid-market, $100 would have delivered KES 12,899. Sendwave delivered KES 12,772, a shortfall of KES 127 which equals about $0.99 at mid-market. Plus the $0.49 flat fee equals $1.48 total cost. That is 1.48 percent, which is competitive under $300 but not the cheapest above.

Worked example: $500 send from the US

You send$500.00
Flat Sendwave fee$0.49
Amount converted$499.51
Sendwave FX rate applied128.30 KES/USD
Recipient getsKES 63,861
All-in cost$5.38 (1.08%)

Notice the all-in percentage drops from 1.48% to 1.08% because the flat fee is a smaller share of the total. But at $500, Wise typically delivers KES 63,900 to 64,100 for about $2 to $3 total cost. That is when the Sendwave-vs-Wise calculation flips.

Sendwave fees vs the alternatives

  • vs Wise: Wise runs mid-market FX plus a 0.43 to 0.5 percent transparent fee (no FX margin). Cheaper above roughly $300, more expensive below.
  • vs Remitly: Remitly offers a promotional first-transfer rate (often mid-market or better) then reverts to a similar flat-plus-margin model. Sendwave usually beats Remitly's steady-state pricing.
  • vs WorldRemit: Sister product, same Zepz parent. Similar all-in cost. WorldRemit has more delivery methods (cash pickup, bank deposit); Sendwave is faster and simpler for M-PESA.
  • vs PayPal Xoom: PayPal charges 3 to 4 percent FX margin, which is 2 to 3x more expensive than Sendwave on any amount. Sendwave wins clearly.
  • vs a US bank wire: Wires cost $25 to $45 flat plus 2 to 4 percent FX margin. Sendwave is roughly 10x cheaper on a $100 send.

FAQ

Is the $0.49 Sendwave fee really the whole cost?

No, and Sendwave does not claim it is. The $0.49 is the flat transfer fee. Sendwave also earns a spread on the FX rate, typically 0.5 to 1 percent below mid-market. On a $100 send that adds roughly $0.50 to $1 on top of the flat fee, for an all-in cost of about 1 to 1.5 percent. Still competitive; still not free.

How do I calculate the true Sendwave fee?

Compare the KES the recipient receives against the mid-market rate for the same USD amount. Formula: true cost = (USD sent × mid-market FX) - KES delivered, converted back to USD. On a $100 send delivered as KES 12,772 against a mid-market of 128.99 KES/USD, the mid-market equivalent is $99.02 delivered, so the true all-in cost is $0.98. Around 1 percent.

Why does the FX margin change day to day?

Sendwave marks up against mid-market; mid-market moves. On a strong-USD day the KES delivered per dollar goes up, and the flat fee is a smaller share of the total. On a weak-USD day the reverse. Track it: the calculator on this page shows today live.

At what send size does Wise get cheaper than Sendwave?

Roughly around $300 to $400 from the US. Below that the $0.49 flat wins; above that Wise's percentage-based 0.43 to 0.5 percent fee scales more favorably than a flat-plus-margin model. On a $1,000 send Wise is usually $5 to $10 cheaper than Sendwave. The calculator surfaces the exact crossover for today's rates.

Do fees differ by sending country?

Yes. The $0.49 flat is US-specific. UK sends have a different flat fee; Canada and EU sends have their own tiers. The FX margin is broadly similar across corridors (0.5 to 1 percent). Our /send-money-to-kenya/from pages break down each corridor.

Is the fee refundable if I cancel?

Yes, if you cancel before Sendwave releases the transfer. Once the send confirms and lands in M-PESA, the fee is not refundable and the transfer itself cannot be clawed back. Sendwave posts refunds to the original debit card within 3 to 5 business days.

Are there any monthly or account fees?

No. Sendwave does not charge a subscription, minimum balance, inactivity fee, or KYC fee. You only pay the per-send fee plus FX margin. This is different from Wise Multi-Currency Account (has ATM and conversion fees on the personal account) and Revolut (has subscription tiers).
