Short-Term Paybill: a harambee that reconciles itself

By Josephine Njeri · Safaricom services hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Safaricom services.

A Short-Term Paybill is a temporary M-PESA paybill for a fundraiser: medical bills, funerals, weddings, school fees, charity. Contributions collect into one number with a record of who paid what, and the paybill is time-bound rather than permanent.

Why this beats collecting on a personal line

The traditional harambee runs through somebody’s personal number, and it creates two problems that have nothing to do with honesty. First, the organiser cannot easily prove what came in, which is corrosive when a family is grieving and money is involved. Second, the contributions are mixed with that person’s own money, so reconciling is guesswork. A dedicated paybill gives a clean record that protects the organiser more than anyone.

The variants

  1. A general Fund, for any cause.
  2. A Funeral Fund.
  3. An Education Fund.

How it runs

You apply for the paybill for a specific cause and period, share the number with contributors, and they pay it with Lipa na M-PESA, Pay Bill. You get a record of all contributions, and funds settle to the nominated account. Because it is time-bound, it closes when the cause is done rather than sitting around as a permanent business paybill.

Getting one

Apply through M-PESA for Business or at a Safaricom shop, with the organiser’s ID and details of the cause. Worth starting before the fundraiser rather than during it, because a number you can circulate on day one collects considerably more than one that arrives on day three.
