Okoa Jahazi: borrowing airtime, and what the 10% really means

By Michael Mwangi · Safaricom services hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with Safaricom services.

Dial *131# (or *456*2#) and choose an amount up to your limit. A 10% service fee is deducted, so you receive the amount less the fee. Repayment comes automatically out of your next top-ups within 120 hours, and you cannot borrow again until it clears.

What 10% over five days actually costs

A 10% fee on a five-day advance is not a 10% interest rate, and it is worth seeing the difference. Borrow KES 100 of airtime and give back KES 110 within 120 hours: annualised, that is an enormous number. This is not an argument against using it, because for a stranded call it is obviously worth it. It is an argument against thinking of it as cheap, and against using it as a routine way to buy airtime.

How it works

  1. Dial *131#, or *456*2#.
  2. Choose an amount. Options run KES 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1,000, up to whatever limit Safaricom has assessed for you.
  3. The airtime lands, less the 10% service fee.
  4. Your next top-ups repay it automatically, within a 120-hour window.
  5. Until it is cleared, you cannot borrow again.

Why you might not qualify

New customers become eligible after roughly 14 days of active use, and the limit afterwards depends on how much you use the line and how reliably you have repaid before. A low or missing limit is usually about usage history rather than anything you have done wrong, and it rises on its own with consistent use.

Okoa is airtime, not money

Worth stating plainly because people conflate the two: Okoa Jahazi advances airtime, repaid from airtime top-ups. It is not an M-PESA loan and it does not put money in your wallet. If you need money rather than minutes, the relevant products are Fuliza, M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA or the Hustler Fund, all of which are covered separately.
