M-PESA B2B: paying another business from your shortcode

B2B lets a business pay another business directly from its own M-PESA shortcode, rather than moving money to a personal line first. You need a shortcode to pay from, either a Paybill or a Bulk Payment shortcode, and settlement is real time.

What it replaces

Without B2B, a business paying a supplier on M-PESA typically withdraws to somebody’s personal line and pays from there. That is slow, it costs more, and it destroys the audit trail at exactly the point an auditor would want one. B2B keeps the payment inside the business identity from end to end.

What can pay what

  1. A business Paybill can pay another organisation’s Paybill, with the account reference that organisation expects.
  2. A business with Buy Goods can pay a supplier’s Buy Goods till.
  3. You initiate from the M-PESA Business portal or an integrated system, and approve under your maker-checker roles.

Getting it switched on

B2B is enabled on an existing Paybill or Bulk shortcode through M-PESA for Business. If you already hold a shortcode, this is a capability added to it rather than a new product to apply for from scratch.
