What Is a SACCO Dividend Advance?

By Dennis Kiptoo · SACCO hub

A SACCO dividend advance is a partial early payout of your expected dividend, offered by some SACCOs in the window before the AGM. You receive part of the money now; the balance settles once the AGM approves the full dividend rate. Not every SACCO offers it every year.

How it works

Your SACCO estimates the likely dividend based on the year's performance, offers an advance percentage (often a portion of the expected total), and pays it to your account. When the AGM approves the final rate, the balance is paid, less the advance already received.

Who typically offers it

Larger DT-SACCOs with strong reserves are the most likely to offer dividend advance. Harambee, Afya, Stima and other top-tier SACCOs have run advance windows in past years. Confirm the current year with your SACCO.

How to qualify

Membership in good standing, a share-capital balance that meets the SACCO's threshold, and no defaulted obligations. Rules vary by SACCO, so check the advance-notice communication when it drops.

Cautions

The advance is only a portion of the expected dividend, and if the final rate falls below the estimate, the balance can be small or nil. Do not rely on it for essential cashflow.

Frequently asked

Is dividend advance guaranteed?

No, it is at the SACCO's discretion and depends on the year's performance.

Do I have to repay it if the final rate is lower?

No, it is deducted from your full dividend at AGM, not borrowed.

How is it paid?

To your SACCO account, in an announced advance window before the AGM.
