Absa is running a second Kenyan wallet alongside Timiza. Absa Next opens an account on a national ID, and its own listing says Kenyan passports are not accepted.
Absa Next is a digital account app for the Kenyan market, published on Google Play by Absa Group Limited and separate from Timiza. It pays out Next Coins as monthly cash, sends by PesaLink, and pays Till, Paybill and Pochi la Biashara. Registration requires a Kenyan national ID, and the listing states that Kenyan passports are not supported.
What changed
- Absa Next is live on Google Play, published by Absa Group Limited, whose developer record gives the address as Absa Towers West, Troye Street, Johannesburg. Read on 3 October 2026, it showed a last update of 22 September 2026 and a 1,000+ download band.
- Google gave the rating inconsistently on the same page that day: 3.7 in the header and 3.8 in the ratings panel, from 39 reviews. Thirty-nine reviews is far too small a base to read as a verdict either way.
- It is a separate product from Timiza, the Absa wallet already covered on this site. Both appear under the same Play developer account.
- Accounts open on a valid Kenyan National ID. The listing states plainly that Kenyan passports are currently not supported for account registration. It does not say what Absa's other account-opening routes accept.
- The app funds from linked debit or credit cards across multiple banks, sends by PesaLink to bank accounts, pays Till Numbers, Paybill and Pochi la Biashara, withdraws at any Absa ATM, lends instantly from the Personal Account, and runs individual and group savings. Its data safety panel says the app may collect Messages.
- Eligible transactions earn Next Coins, which Absa says are converted to cash and credited monthly. The listing does not say what counts as eligible, or what a coin is worth.
Why it matters
Two things here are worth a reader's attention. The first is the ID rule. A bank saying it will not accept a Kenyan passport for account opening is unusual enough that people will hit it by surprise, and it is the sort of detail that costs someone an afternoon. It is stated in Absa's own listing, so it is worth knowing before you download anything. What the listing does not say is what Absa's other routes accept, so it is a reason to ask rather than a reason to give up. The second is the rewards. Next Coins converted to monthly cash is a real benefit if the rate is meaningful and close to nothing if it is not, and Absa has not published the rate. Treat a rewards scheme as worth nothing until you can see the arithmetic. That is the same test paybillke applies to every bonus, cashback and loyalty offer on this site.
What to do
- If you hold a Kenyan passport rather than a national ID, Absa Next will not onboard you. Ask Absa what its other account-opening routes accept before travelling to a branch.
- Absa Next and Timiza are different products with separate balances. Know which one you are in before you call support about a transaction.
- Ask Absa what a Next Coin is worth before treating the rewards as a reason to switch.
- Absa Bank Kenya is at absabank.co.ke. The support number on the Play listing is a South African one, because the app is published under Absa Group's Johannesburg developer account.
