How to open an NCBA account

By Arnold Ochieng · NCBA Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with NCBA Bank Kenya.

You can open an NCBA personal current account entirely inside the NCBA Now app, which is the fastest route and needs no branch visit. You can also apply online or walk into a branch. You will need your national ID or passport and your KRA PIN.

The three routes

In the app. NCBA Now handles sign-up to first transaction. This is the one NCBA itself pushes, and it removes the queue entirely.

Online. Apply through ncbagroup.com and complete verification as directed.

At a branch. Still the right answer for business accounts, joint accounts and anything needing documents signed in person. Find one through the branch locator.

What to bring

Your national ID or passport, and your KRA PIN certificate. Some accounts also ask for proof of income or proof of address, and business accounts need registration documents and the signatories' details. The exact list depends on the account, so check it before you make the trip.

On opening balances, honestly

Figures of "from about KES 2,000" circulate for NCBA personal accounts, and they may well be right, but we could not confirm a current opening balance on NCBA's own site and we will not publish a number we have not seen. Opening balances and monthly fees differ by account type and NCBA revises them. Ask on 0800 720 444, or read the tariff guide on ncbagroup.com before you choose an account. It takes two minutes and it is the figure most likely to have moved.

Which account

Match the account to the behaviour, not the name. If money comes in and goes straight out, a current account is right. If it sits, look at a savings account and compare the rate against a money market fund, which will usually beat a bank savings rate. If you are trading, a business account is not optional, because running business receipts through a personal account causes problems with both the bank and KRA.
