NCBA cards, forex, unit trusts and insurance
By Arnold Ochieng · NCBA Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with NCBA Bank Kenya.
NCBA runs the full set beyond current accounts: debit, credit and prepaid cards, foreign exchange for individuals and businesses, unit trust funds including a money market fund, and insurance through its bancassurance arm.
Cards
A debit card comes with the account. Credit cards and prepaid cards are separate applications. The useful detail is that the NCBA Now app lets you set card limits and block or unblock a card yourself, which matters more than any feature list the day you lose your wallet.
Forex
NCBA handles foreign exchange for individuals and for businesses with trade flows. For a one-off personal conversion, compare the bank's rate against the alternatives rather than assuming, because the spread on a retail bank conversion is often wider than it looks. If you are receiving money from abroad rather than converting it yourself, our send money to Kenya comparison covers what the corridors actually cost.
Unit trusts
NCBA Investment Bank runs unit trust funds, including a money market fund. A money market fund is where idle cash usually belongs rather than a bank savings account, because the yield is materially higher for similar liquidity. Compare the current rate against the rest of the market on our Kenyan money market fund comparison before you commit, since fund yields move and last year's leader is rarely this year's.
Insurance
Health, life and motor cover through NCBA's bancassurance team, which places policies with underwriters rather than underwriting itself. Convenient if you want it alongside the account. As with any bancassurance, get a quote or two from outside the bank before renewing, because bundling is sold on convenience and not always on price.
