Why Kenyan P2P traders bank with I&M
By Arnold Ochieng · I&M Bank Kenya hub · paybillke is an independent guide and is not affiliated with I&M Bank Kenya.
Because on a personal I&M account, money moves between the bank and M-PESA at zero cost in both directions, and a P2P trader crosses that boundary constantly. A transfer fee on every leg eats the spread that the whole trade is built on, so a free rail is worth more to a high-frequency trader than to anyone else.
The chain of facts, each checkable
- In January 2023, after CBK reintroduced bank-to-wallet charges, I&M became the first Kenyan bank to waive Bank to M-PESA and Bank to Airtel Money fees. Reported at the time as permanent.
- I&M's current tariff lists M-PESA to account transfer at Nil, so the inbound leg is free today.
- We confirmed with I&M on 13 September 2026 that the outbound leg from a personal account is still KES 0.
- Binance P2P and the other exchanges settle Kenyan trades over M-PESA and bank transfer, so a trader is moving between wallet and bank several times a week.
Put together: for a personal-account trader, the fiat rail costs nothing. That is the entire argument, and it is a real one.
The catch nobody mentions
If you trade at volume and I&M has you on a business account, the outbound leg is not free. I&M's tariff charges a band topping out at KES 65 per transaction from 7,501 shillings upward, and that KES 65 holds all the way to 150,000.
At forty outbound transfers a month that is KES 2,600, which is a real cost against a thin P2P spread. Two things follow. First, know which account type you actually hold. Second, because the top band is a flat fee per transaction rather than a percentage, batching a few large withdrawals beats a stream of small ones. Six transfers of 50,000 cost KES 390; thirty of 10,000 cost KES 1,950 for the same money moved.
Do not skip the escrow rule
A cheap rail does not make P2P safe. The rule that prevents most P2P losses has nothing to do with your bank:
Your own phone must show the money before you release the crypto. Not a screenshot, not a forwarded SMS, not a promise, not an edited receipt. Your own confirmation, in your own hand.
Our Binance P2P guide walks the full flow and the scams page covers the five patterns that actually hit Kenyans.
The risk warning, which is not boilerplate
Crypto is high risk and highly volatile, and you can lose everything you put in. Prices swing hard, P2P counterparties are strangers, and if you lose your private keys there is no bank to call and no reversal.
Kenya now regulates virtual-asset service providers under the VASP Act, and providers are expected to register as the framework rolls out. That is a positive development and it does not make any individual coin, platform or trade safe.
This page is information, not financial advice. paybillke is not affiliated with I&M Bank, Binance or any exchange, and we do not tell you to trade. We are describing what a rail costs, which is a payments question, and payments are what this site is about. Never trade with borrowed money or money you need.
How to set it up sensibly
- Open a personal I&M account if the free rail is the reason you are here, and confirm the fee position for your account type in writing.
- Register for OTG and *458#, since you want the fastest possible route both ways.
- Note your 14-digit account number and save it where you can copy it, because you will type it constantly. See the deposit page.
- Batch outbound transfers rather than drip-feeding them, especially if you are on a business account.
- Keep records. Trading income is income, and our KRA guide for online earners covers what that means.
About this guide
Frequently asked
What is the best bank for Binance P2P in Kenya?
Traders favour I&M because personal-account transfers to and from M-PESA cost nothing, so no fee eats the P2P spread.
Is I&M to M-PESA really free for traders?
On a personal account, yes, confirmed with I&M in September 2026. On a business account it is charged up to KES 65 per transaction.
Does I&M support crypto trading?
This is about the cost of moving shillings between a bank and M-PESA. I&M does not offer crypto products and we are not affiliated with any exchange.
Is crypto legal in Kenya?
Kenya's VASP Act took effect on 4 November 2025. Under section 47, providers already operating have until 4 November 2026 to comply. As of 25 October 2026 we found no provider licensed under it on a CBK or CMA register. A licence, when one exists, does not make any coin or trade safe, and crypto remains high risk.
How do I avoid losing money on P2P?
Never release crypto until your own phone shows the payment. Not a screenshot, not a forwarded message.
