How Nation Sacco loans work
Like every SASRA-licensed DT-SACCO, Nation Sacco lends primarily against your savings held in the SACCO. The loanable amount is a multiple of your qualifying deposits (typically 3x to 5x, depending on the product) and the loan must be guaranteed either by other members or by collateral (title deed, logbook, chattel). Verified on the SASRA register of Licensed Deposit-Taking SACCOs (sasra.go.ke/licensed-dt-saccos, accessed 26 August 2026).
Almost all Kenyan SACCOs quote loans on a flat interest basis rather than reducing-balance. Flat 12 percent per year sounds cheaper than a bank's 15 percent reducing balance, but is actually more expensive over the life of the loan. The main Nation Sacco loan products
Product menus differ SACCO to SACCO, but almost every Kenyan DT-SACCO offers the following types:
- Development loan. The workhorse SACCO product. Terms up to 6 years, 3x to 4x multiplier, flat interest. Used for plot purchase, construction, buying a car, business capital.
- Emergency loan. Shorter term (typically 6 to 12 months), lower multiplier (typically 1x or 2x), fast disbursal (often same-day). Higher relative rate.
- School fees loan. Seasonal (January, May, September). Repayment aligned to the school term. Often disbursed straight to the school.
- Instant loan (mobile). Small-ticket, short-term, disbursed to your FOSA account or M-PESA. Sub-KES 100,000.
- Asset finance and car loan. Term up to 5 to 6 years, secured by logbook.
- Mortgage and plot loan. Up to 15 years in some cases, secured by title deed.
- Refinance and normal top-up. Once you have paid down enough of an existing loan, you can top it back up to your original limit.

Understanding the rate: a KES 50,000 worked example
A flat rate quoted at 1 percent per month means: on a KES 50,000 loan over 12 months, you pay KES 500 in interest every month for 12 months, regardless of how much principal you have already repaid. Total interest: KES 6,000. Total repayment: KES 56,000 in 12 equal monthly instalments of roughly KES 4,667.
On a reducing-balance basis, the same KES 6,000 interest on an average outstanding balance of KES 27,000 works out to roughly 22 to 24 percent APR-equivalent. This is why comparisons need to be careful. Bank rates in Kenya are almost always quoted reducing-balance. Mobile-app rates are usually quoted per-week or per-month with fees. See the walk-through in SACCO loan vs bank loan vs mobile app.
Guarantors: how they actually work
Most SACCO loans are guaranteed by fellow members up to the loan amount. This means:
- Two to five members typically pledge their savings against your loan.
- If you default, the SACCO can attach the guarantors' savings up to the outstanding balance.
- A member cannot guarantee more than their own savings can cover.
- Some SACCOs allow self-guaranteeing (using only your own savings) for smaller loans.
- Alternatives: collateral (title deed, logbook), fixed deposit as security, external insurance.
How to apply for a Nation Sacco loan
- Confirm you have served the qualifying savings period (typically six months of contributions).
- Confirm your loanable balance (savings x multiplier, minus outstanding loans).
- Line up your guarantors and get them to sign the application form (or upload their consent on the member portal).
- Submit the application form with recent payslips (three months) and bank statements.
- The credit committee reviews and, if approved, the funds are disbursed to your FOSA account or your M-PESA.
- Repayments start the following month, either by payroll check-off (if you are on a partner employer) or standing order or M-PESA (paybill the SACCO's published paybill).
Watch-outs
- Loan-to-savings ratio. If you fully borrow against your savings, you lose the compounding benefit of savings and dividends. Do not borrow to the maximum just because you can.
- Insurance. Loan protection insurance is deducted from disbursement. Read the schedule.
- Prepayment penalty. Because interest is flat, prepaying does not usually reduce the interest owed. Confirm the SACCO's prepayment rules before topping up early.
- Guarantor discipline. If you guarantee a friend's loan, treat that as if you had borrowed the money yourself. If they default, your savings pay.
