What Lipa na Airtel Money is

Lipa na Airtel Money is the merchant-payment feature on Airtel Money. Instead of sending cash to a person, you pay a business paybill number and the funds settle to the business's Airtel Money merchant account. Same idea as Lipa na M-PESA paybill, just on the Airtel rail. Airtel refreshed the product with a public rate cut in November 2023, which is the last widely-cited pricing update.

How to pay a paybill via Airtel Money

Via the Airtel Money app

  1. Open the Airtel Money app on your Airtel-registered phone.
  2. Choose Pay Bill (or the equivalent menu label the current app shows).
  3. Enter the business Airtel Money paybill number.
  4. Enter the account (usually your customer reference, account number, phone number, or whatever the business asks for).
  5. Enter the amount in KES.
  6. Confirm the merchant name shown before you enter the PIN. If the name is not the business you expect, cancel.
  7. Enter your Airtel Money PIN and confirm.

Via USSD

  1. On your Airtel SIM, dial *334#.
  2. Choose the Pay Bill option from the menu.
  3. Enter the business paybill number.
  4. Enter the account number.
  5. Enter the amount.
  6. Confirm the merchant name.
  7. Enter PIN, confirm.

You get a confirmation SMS from Airtel Money with the transaction reference. Keep it: it is the evidence for any dispute, and it is what the business support team will ask for if the payment does not reflect on their side.

Tariff bands (why we do not publish figures)

The Airtel Money site (airtelmoney.ke) is a client-side React app and does not expose a stable public endpoint we can programmatically snapshot. That plus the fact that Airtel has moved the schedule over time (November 2023 was the last widely-cited public rate cut) means any specific KES figure we published today would go stale without notice.

What we can name honestly:

  • Fee is on the sending side. The customer pays the paybill fee; the business bears its own merchant charges separately.
  • Fee is banded by amount. Small bands often carry small or zero fees; larger amounts step up to a higher band.
  • November 2023 rate cut. Airtel publicly reduced Lipa na Airtel Money paybill charges. If a comparison article you are reading pre-dates that, its numbers are out of date.
  • Verify current at airtelmoney.ke. Or call Airtel customer care on 100 and ask for the current Lipa na Airtel Money paybill tariff for your amount band. Two minutes, correct answer, no gambling on stale numbers.

Cross-network paybill: what actually works

Kenyan mobile money has been interoperable at the retail level since 2018. In practice that means:

  • Same paybill, different rail: some businesses use the same paybill number for both Safaricom Lipa na M-PESA and Lipa na Airtel Money, and it just works.
  • Different paybill, different rail: other businesses publish a separate Airtel Money paybill. The Safaricom number will not route to the Airtel Money merchant account.
  • Paybill not mapped on Airtel Money at all: the business only accepts Lipa na M-PESA. Attempts from Airtel Money will bounce or land at the wrong merchant.

The safe pattern: look at the business site or receipt for the Airtel Money paybill they publish. If it is not obvious, message their support and ask "what is your Airtel Money paybill number?" before you pay. Never assume a Safaricom paybill will work on Airtel Money because "interop is live." Interop being live means the rails are open, not that every merchant is mapped on every rail.

When a paybill payment fails

The three failure modes, in order of likelihood:

  1. Wallet not debited, transaction cancelled or timed out. Retry. Nothing moved. Check that the paybill number is correct before retrying.
  2. Wallet debited, business not credited yet. Wait 5 minutes. Airtel Money settlement occasionally queues. If still nothing after 5 minutes, contact the business support with the transaction reference from your Airtel Money SMS. The business reconciliation team can often locate and allocate the payment on their side.
  3. Wallet debited, wrong merchant credited. Symptom: the confirmation SMS shows a merchant name that is not the business you meant to pay. You typed the wrong paybill (a common scam pattern is a paybill one digit off from a legitimate one, mapped to a random merchant). Recovery is harder than a personal-transfer reversal; contact Airtel Money on 100 immediately with the transaction reference. Prevention: always confirm the merchant name shown before you enter your PIN.

Practical tips

  • Save frequent paybills in the app. The Airtel Money app supports saved billers on some versions; using the saved biller eliminates the typo risk.
  • Keep the reference SMS. Everything you need for a dispute or a business-side allocation is in that message. Do not delete it until the payment has reflected.
  • Rudishiwa may refund some fees. If Airtel Money's fee-refund programme is active on your account for the transaction category, the paybill fee may be partly or fully refunded to the wallet. Check the current Rudishiwa terms at airtelmoney.ke.
  • Sanity-check large payments. On amounts above your normal, phone the business first to confirm the paybill and account they want you to use.
