Before you go

Airtel Money is CBK-regulated. That means the KYC is real and the paperwork is real. The onboarding will fail if any of the three prerequisites is missing:

  1. A registered Airtel line in your own name. Not a friend's SIM, not a SIM you bought from a street vendor and never re-registered. The Airtel line itself must be enrolled under your ID via Kenya's SIM registration rules. Confirm by dialling *106# on Airtel or asking Airtel customer care on 100.
  2. Original ID. National ID for citizens, Passport otherwise. Bring the physical card, not a photo or photocopy. Under-18s cannot open Airtel Money.
  3. Your phone with the Airtel SIM in it and enough charge to dial *334#. The agent completes the ID capture, you complete the PIN setup on the phone in front of them.

At the agent

Any Airtel shop or authorised Airtel Money agent can register you. Agents display an official Airtel Money badge; if there is no badge, walk away and find a real one.

  1. Hand over your original ID and the Airtel phone number you want registered.
  2. The agent looks up the line, confirms your ID matches the SIM registration on file, takes a photo or scan of the ID for the record.
  3. They initiate the account creation on the Airtel Money agent portal. You may get an SMS asking you to confirm the enrolment.
  4. Once confirmed, they hand the phone back for the self-activation step.

Registration itself is free. If any agent asks for a fee to open the account, they are not authorised. Walk away and report to Airtel customer care on 100.

Self-activation and PIN setup

Two options: the app or USSD.

Via the Airtel Money app

  1. Install Airtel Money from the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
  2. Open the app, choose the Airtel number registered at the agent.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to set a 4-digit PIN. Re-enter it to confirm.
  4. You receive a confirmation SMS. You are live.

Via USSD

  1. On your Airtel SIM, dial *334#. (On a dual-SIM phone, pick the Airtel SIM before dialling; the same code on a Safaricom SIM opens M-PESA instead.)
  2. Follow the activate/setup prompt.
  3. Set a 4-digit PIN, re-enter to confirm.
  4. Wait for the confirmation SMS.

Common failures and how to fix them

Ranked by how often we see them:

  1. SIM not yet registered under new SIM-registration rules. Symptom: agent says "the line is not linked to an ID" or "the ID on file does not match." Fix: register the SIM in your name via Airtel customer care on 100, or at the same Airtel shop, before retrying Airtel Money onboarding.
  2. ID name mismatch. Symptom: the SIM is registered but under a slightly different name (marriage change, initial vs full name, typo). Fix: update the SIM registration to match your current ID exactly. Airtel customer care handles the update; have both your ID and the SIM in hand.
  3. Under-18. No workaround. Airtel Money is a regulated wallet, KYC gate is 18+.
  4. Second Airtel Money account attempt. One ID, one Airtel Money account. If you already have an account on another Airtel line under the same ID, the second attempt fails. Deactivate the old one via customer care first.
  5. ID under review. If you recently applied for a National ID and the ID number is not yet in the government registry that Airtel checks against, wait a few days and retry.

What to do once you are live

  • Deposit at any Airtel Money agent to fund the wallet. Free to deposit, you pay to withdraw or send.
  • Read the tariff structure. Sends to another Airtel Money number are free; sends to M-PESA or T-Kash are banded; Lipa na Airtel Money paybill has its own tariffs. See Lipa na Airtel Money paybill charges 2026 and Airtel Money withdrawal charges 2026.
  • Enable Rudishiwa if promoted. Airtel Money's fee refund programme runs on published rules that change. If it is active on your account, qualifying fees are refunded to the wallet.
  • Set a memorable PIN and a spending limit if you can. Airtel Money app exposes some in-app controls; use them.

Pitfalls we see

  • Registering on a shared SIM. If the Airtel SIM is registered in someone else's name, the wallet ends up in their name and any KYC or dispute goes through them. Only register on a SIM registered under your own ID.
  • Assuming *334# is M-PESA everywhere. On the Airtel SIM, it is Airtel Money. On Safaricom, it is M-PESA. Muscle memory catches people out on dual-SIM phones.
  • Handing the PIN to the agent. The agent completes the ID capture; the PIN is set by you, on your phone, alone. If any agent asks for or offers to type your PIN, refuse.
