M-KOPA sells smartphones and solar systems on instalments, and the device stays partially controlled by M-KOPA until you finish paying. That means a missed or misdirected payment is not just a billing problem, it can lock your phone. Getting the account field right matters more here than almost anywhere else.

The verified paybill

M-KOPA is paybill 333222. The account is your M-KOPA account ID, which is printed on the device and shown in the M-KOPA app. It is not your phone number.

Pay M-KOPA step by step

  1. Open the M-PESA app, or dial *334#.
  2. Select Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
  3. Business number: 333222.
  4. Account: your M-KOPA account ID.
  5. Enter the amount, at least your daily or scheduled instalment.
  6. Enter your M-PESA PIN and confirm.

Keep the M-PESA SMS. M-KOPA credits the payment and unlocks the device within about 15 minutes in the normal case.

Phone or solar still locked after paying

After you finish paying, and CRB

Clearing an M-KOPA balance in full does not automatically update your credit record if you were ever listed. Ask M-KOPA for a clearance letter (usually issued within 7 working days). They then update CRB, and the listing clears within about 14 days of the letter.

M-KOPA charges no fee on top of the M-PESA tariff. Small daily instalments fall in the lowest fee bands.
